Fic: He Who Should Not Be [R]

A/N: Sorry this took so long to put together! I wrote this section, hated it, rewrote...still didn't want to have anything to do with it. Deleted it. Wrote something entirely different. That is this result. Would have been up earlier in the evening but I had a lost time incident reading Solitary Confinement. Mental Asylum AU. Kinda graphic with a ( Read more... )

That was a very interesting turn. I was a bit confused every now and then about which "John" is driving, but, I guess, John is, too.

So, Jim was right all along: They are essentially the same person - well, of course they are, but they are, as I understand it, not actually different personalities - John has simply shoved a part of himself away and demonized that part. Reaper is not actually the "bad guy" John thinks he is.

That's very complex, but does make a lot of sense, if one thinks about it. Even in Doom, John sees himself as potentially evil, while Sam just knows he isn't - hence Jim reminding Reaper of her!

Up until this point, we had only seen the slimmest view of Reaper. Everything we had been lead to believe had been from the very biased viewpoint of John, who is pretty well terrified of it. Due mostly to the fact that he spends a great deal of time with Jim; and Jim has been doing little things to push Reaper to the surface.

Take it as you like it, but I had originally intended for "Reaper" to be all of the John's darker negative qualities pooled together into its own singular being. As Jim prodded, he brought all of that out; hence the reason why after the first encounter Reaper acted out to physically harm the young man. Eventually now coming to a point where he's even fighting with himself to keep his head. Saying that it was thanks to the influence of his "better half".

Trippy, no?

As a side note:

Have you ever read "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs"? It's a children's book about the Three Little Pigs story, written from the PoV of the wolf himself. Cute story, and what comes to mind now as I write my reply.

Trippy indeed, but that's what's so great about it.

I didn't mean to say that Reaper is not darker than John. But it's not a Jekyll-Hyde thing either. As you said: John is so terrified of everything that makes up Reaper that, for the reader, it comes as a surprise that the "Reaper"-personality is not so much a "Mr. Hyde" but a darker John.

And I like it that Reaper, too, begins to fall for Jim's charm.

Now I'm gonna check out the link you provided ...

Checked it out and I'm thinking about buying the book, especially since I'm very much interested in the use of the wolf as a symbol in fairytales and modern stories relating to / adapting fairytales. Thanks for the tip!

Have you ever read "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the the West" by Gregory Maguire? It's the story about how a young (green) woman in the Land of Oz came to be the Wicked Witch of the West that Dorothy meets in "The Wizard of Oz" - and what really happened between them and why (although the actual Wizard-of-Oz part is rather small). I abolutely adore this book - it also works with different perspectives and different styles of writing. Really a great read, if rather dark at times.
