Aoi stared out at the cityscape, the bright lights twinkling back at him in greeting as though tempting him, daring him, to reach out just beyond that ledge and touch them. The buildings that sprawled before him stretched out to the darkened sky, trying their best to brush against a heaven that they could never reach. And in that inky black sky glittered the stars, winking at those man-made luminaries almost mockingly, knowingly, confident in their superiority.
What was it that kept him drawn to this familiar scene? It was a depressing reflection of the world that he had tried so hard to keep at bay all these years. Where everyone else saw beauty and faltered in awe, Aoi only saw failure and stumbled in despair.
Cigarette smoke wafted away from his lips, lured away by the gentle urgings of a passing breeze. Ashes fell from between trembling fingers, drifting far below and coming to rest upon cold concrete. And one by one the tears dripped onto velvet cloth, the costume that masked the truth, soaking deep into the fabric and staining it even darker than it had been before.
The sounds of the world fell on deaf ears as Aoi surveyed that cityscape, the vitality of its very soul lost on him as he stood still amongst his own shadows.
