The time would have been eight years ago. My baby brother was brought home that day. I could see the happiness on my mother’s face as she stares at her boy. All the servants gush over the new addition into our family. I wanted to see the new baby too. Unfortunately, there were too many people around the bundle of joy. I was forced out into the hall by all the gathered people.
I could hear my father in his study talking to his business partners. They were celebrating. I could hear my father clearly. “I finally have a legitimate male heir. Someone to run my company when it is my time to leave. I don’t have to worry about the inheritance issue anymore.”
I knew what that meant to us, my older brother and I. Walking out the front door, I made the journey to visit Kakeru. No one stopped me because I no longer mattered. Walking by myself without anyone giving me the slightest hint of being noticed, I reached my destination. I knocked on the door and he answered.
“Machi, why are you here?”
“We have a baby brother now.”
“That’s good news! Why aren’t you smiling?”
“It’s because we no longer mattered to the family. An heir is born. We are going to be cast aside.”
My brother hugged me and tried to make it all right. However, we both knew that what I said was true. We don’t matter in this family anymore. A little time afterwards, neither one of us live at the main house nor do we get visits from the family. It is because of that point in time.
