Someone pointed out to me that almost every mighty weapon is shaped like a penis in one way or another (in fact, it was a tutor for Psychology).
Hammer. Axe. Staff. Sword. Mallet. Bat.
However, there are things shaped like a vagina, such as the vagina.
And I think the reason we can't be as spontaneous and carefree like our dear Penis is because we're restricted by too many social standards and moral integrity. Throw that in with the fact that people are naturally guarded -- to a certain extent -- and fearful of the unknown and you'll have an even greater impediment. You already brought up this point. If you think about it, it's a cycle that sustains itself: being guarded and controlling ourselves = refinement = being secure and in control.
And beating around the bush is bad -- I agree. It's much better to be inside the bush ^^'.
