Periodic Update

I apparently have issues with this whole "using LiveJournal regularly" thing. I do want to use LJ more frequently in shorter bursts instead of very infrequently in long bursts.

So, things of interest in no particular order:
  • I'm currently up in McLean, Virginia (outside of Washington DC) staying with my grandmother for a week. I've been doing this ( Read more... )

What does your DNS assignment entail? If its just nslookups, you could do that from a different box (via ssh?) If you need to actually sniff DNS requests... hm, do you have root access to a box outside the network? You could tcpdump to get raw data, and then import that file into wireshark for analysis.

I was able to get it working by manually specifying nslookup to use OpenDNS' servers instead of the local DNS server, and I agree I could have also used sshing or whatnot. It wasn't impossible, just harder then it should have been (and I twisted the assignment a bit to make it work, 'cause I assumed "no, I didn't get anything at all" was not an acceptable answer to the problem).

Max, first of all, I doubt you'll be able to get into Karwowski's course. You can't even enroll in it until the fall, during drop/add. I was unable to add the course during that time this past year, and I seriously /badgered/ him about it...

Second of all,...there is no second of all.

Why would I be unable to add until drop/add?

Also, it magically turned into "Staff" when I just checked on it, so perhaps I should avoid it again. Can possibly switch out for 547 with Adalsteinsson.

There's a block on it. You have to add through Sally someone in the Physics dep't and she'll only add you if Karwowski will let her and he'll only let you if all the first years have added in the fall already and there's still room.

Shaddi and I both had David A. for 547. It was very easy, but I did not learn very much. That might be that class always. Also, some stats:
-I added that class 2 weeks late.
-I stopped showing up to class after Fall Break.
-I showed up to the final 15 minutes late (/this/ was an accident)

=> B for Maggie. Could I have done better w/o much more effort? Absolutely.

It isn't to say that I didn't learn anything with Plaisted, it was just not very challenging with exams unless you didn't do the practice exams before or didn't attend class. You'll still learn everything you'll need to know: O(n) time, BSTs, sorting, etc. etc. His course page is here: http://cs.unc.edu/~plaisted/comp550/ In other words, an easy A if you show up ( ... )

Wow...this humanities girl thinks "Algorithm Analysis" sounds horrifying, but I'm glad you're looking forward to it! :D!

What's the colloquium about? Does it have a topic?

And have I mentioned enough how awesome it is that you did my taxes? :D

Well, algorithms analysis is a pretty fundamental course for a CS major, and it's being taught by a good teacher (instead of the bad one that normally teaches it) so that's why I'm excited. It's okay if it sounds horrifying, although for me, personally, OS is much more horrifying (and awesome!).

Haven't heard yet about a topic for the colloquium--the honors department will actually send out all the course info officially (this is just from their website) on Monday, so by then they might have added a topic.

Yes, you did. And you took me out to eat twice. :D

(Yay, you're reading my blog! Are you reading it via protected RSS (I guess the same way we did Amanda's) so you can see my protected posts as well, or just normally?)

Any advice on classes /I/ should take?
I know I'm taking OS, and I would like to take Algorithms (750), but that still leaves 2 course slots open for really, /anything/.
I think I might take FREN204, and something else...maybe an English class?

Additionally, I have to take physics /eventually/, but I think it would be too much in the fall.
My Spring plan is much more solidified than my Fall plan (Compilers, probability, physics, one other course).

You should pretend you're a first-year and take future perfect again. :P

Seriously, those CS courses are going to be killer but AWESOME. Like mine but more KILLER. You can help me with mine. :D

Will respond on your post.
