If your iMac is six years old, you should be running equally old version of Photoshop. This is because the hardware requirements of applications keep growing. In general, I would recommend deleting unnecessary files from your hard drive. You could also try to upgrade your computer:
- buy more memory (RAM), easy and cheap option
- buy faster and bigger hard drive (you could even buy SSD, but for six year old computer this is inefficient)

I'd say your top priority should be more RAM, if possible - unfortunately, iMacs from around that time can only manage around 4-6GB, so it's possible you're already at capacity. To find out, see if you can locate your model on this EveryMac page. (Elsewhere on the site, you can find detailed information on what specification memory you'll want for that particular model)

Other than that, an SSD would be a good step - that way, even when you do run short on memory, and the iMac has to start swapping out to disk, that exchange is much faster, resulting in a far less noticeable pause while it does so. For a system of that age, you wouldn't need to be concerned with the latest and greatest SSD, just something of a suitable capacity for your needs.
