i will die ten years from now

For my educational technology class, I had to create a web page and include a "teleography", or basically a little story that describes what my life would be like ten years from now. My teacher wanted us to be creative, but after seeing everyone else's start with "Dear Diary..." I decided to take a different approach. I wrote an obituary.

LOS ANGELES -- WRITER-DIRECTOR MCLEAN THOMPSON FOUND DEAD IN HOTEL ROOM

OCTOBER 5, 2018 - McLean Thompson, the Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated writer and director, was found dead Thursday morning in a hotel room at the Chateau Marmont hotel at age 30. Drug overdose is the suspected cause of death, as police found various medications and drug paraphernalia around the room. An autopsy held later in the week will reveal more.

Thompson, more commonly known as Mac by friends and colleagues, was in L.A. to negotiate a deal with Paramount Pictures to write the sequel to the film "Ender's Game," which he adapted into a screenplay last year. The film, which Thompson also directed, releases later this month and is already getting Oscar buzz.

Thompson received his first Oscar nomination in 2016 for his original semi-autobiographical screenplay "Twine" but lost to Diablo Cody's "Stripped". Although he did win 2 Golden Globes for best Screenplay and Best Original Score, he fed into his drug and alcohol problem, partying with Hollywood's elite.

His initial success was met with much interest. He was hired to direct music videos for musical talent such as N*E*R*D and also wrote and directed various episodes of the Showtime comedy series "Hash."

After photos of Thompson doing lines of cocaine off Dakota Fanning's chest were circulated around the internet in early 2017, he was admitted to Promises Residential Treatment Center in Malibu. He received full support from his ex-girlfriend, actress-singer Miley Cyrus, who was admitted in 2015 for her own addiction problems. It is reported that he wrote the screenplay of the first of the "Ender" series by Orson Scott Card while he was being treated at Promises.

Things seemed to be looking bright for Thompson when in early 2018 he was invited by NBC to develop a pilot for a new TV show based on the stories that regularly appear on his blog, HighOnTheHighway.com. Although the pilot never took flight, his production of Ender's Game proved to be a success and will likely garner multiple awards come next March, including Best Adapted Screenplay.

He leaves behind a surprisingly short yet firm career. His tragic death will hopefully be a wake up call for other promising new stars living their lives in the fast lane.
