We don't see it much in the U.S. either, but there is a plethora of it down in Mexico. This was a very subtle, mild case, but I am 99% convinced between the tic and the footpad hyperkeratosis that's what we have on our hands.
He's probably past being contagious according to the infectious disease folks on VIN, but I worry a little bit that he could progress to seizures at some point.
Woo...haven't lost my touch afterall. The hyperkeratosis is suspicious, esp. in a young dog. But all the bits kinda hint. Hard to say what the extent of neuro damage there might be and how its going to cont/or not cont. to progress.
Sounds like a special case, suppose it means you have to take it home as well ;)
Well, it's just so darn unpredictable it could be years before it does progress. He seems otherwise healthy, so we'll keep an eye on him for a few more weeks before letting him go to anyone else's home. I'll be typing up a form on the disease (along with the tick-borne illnesses) so any potential adopters know what they're getting themselves into.
He's actually incredibly sweet. I hope we don't see any progression and we can find him a good home.
Sweet! Distemper! (I'm basing that on the paw pads).
They see a bunch (relatively) of cases in WY, according to the dlab there, due to the reservations. If you have time, give em a call and ask how they generally do - I didn't ask, when I was talking about it w/ em.
