Chapter 7

Ryosuke in a towel rushed downstairs, having just had a shower.

He shot past Ryuu.

“Shimatta, shimatta, shimatta. Ryuu, have you seen my glasses?” Ryosuke called.

“No, 'fraid not.” Ryuu said not looking up from his DS.

“Shimatta.” Ryosuke said, still searching and with no help from Ryuu who was too busy with his DS to actually register that Ryosuke needed help.

“This happens every time I go to the cinema.  Average day, my glasses are everywhere... everywhere I look, glasses.  But the moment I need them they disappear.  It's one of life's real cruelties.” Ryosuke groaned.

Ryuu just nodded, not really hearing what he’d say.

“Oh jeez, is that the time?  I have to go.” Ryosuke said only to fall, again, on deaf ears.

Ryosuke went upstairs again to change.

A little while later, he sprinted downstairs, now fully dressed.

He paused in front of Ryuu, who was still playing with his DS. “Thanks for your help on the glasses thing.” He said sarcastically.

“You're welcome.  Did you find them?” Ryuu said sincerely, but still not taking his eyes off the screen.

“Sort of.”

---

Mirai giggled besides Ryosuke in the cinema. Thank goodness they were watching RomCom and no one would ask why she was laughing.

But she still can’t get over it. She had resisted looking at Ryosuke because she knows she wouldn’t be able to hold any longer.

Next to Mirai, Ryosuke was watching the movie keenly, through his scuba diving goggles.

---

After the movie they went to smart looking Korean restaurant, as recommended by Ryosuke.

It was a bit crowded and the customers on the other table, a group of men,  were a bit loud but it was comfortable there.

They had fun chatting while eating. Ryosuke very much enjoyed the movie, but Mirai couldn't really recall it much. She figured she'd just go along the conversation. It was as if she had seen a new side of Ryosuke. He was just like a child with his excitement.

Mirai was happy it seems Ryosuke was comfortable around her now. She was starting to see the real him.

They were near the end of their meal when Mirai thought to ask.

"So about your ex-girlfriend..." She started, remembering that Chinen said.

"She left me." Ryosuke said.

"Why?" Mirai asked.

"She saw through me." Ryosuke said, smirking.

Mirai also smiled. "Uh-oh.  That's not good."

That was when they heard it. Two slightly rowdy men appears to be arguing.

"No, no, no!  Give me Shida Mirai any day." One guy said.

Ryosuke and Mirai looked at each other.

"I didn't like that last film of hers." The other guy said. "Fast asleep from the moment the lights went down."

Mirai rolled her eyes.

"Don't really care what the films are like.  Any film with her in it.. fine by me." The first guy said.

"No. Not my type at all really.  I prefer that other one. Tall, sweet looking, the one who'd appear in an AV before." The second guy said.

Mirai smirked, and then to Ryosuke she mouthed, 'Yara Megu.'

"Yara Megu." The first guy said.

Ryosuke and Mirai chuckled silently. Now the both of them are completely eavesdropping.

"But that Shida..." The second guy said, "Drug-induced, I hear... I believe she's actually in rehab as we speak."

"Whatever, she's so clearly up for it."

Mirai's smile faded.

"You know, some girls, they're all 'stay away chum' but Shida, she's absolutely gagging for it.  Do you know that in over fifty percent of languages the word for "actress" is the same as the word for "prostitute."

Ryosuke couldn't believe what he was hearing, what's more, he couldn't believe Mirai was also hearing this.

This was horrible.

"And Shida is your definitive actress... someone really filthy you can just flip over..."

"Right, that's it." Ryosuke said.

He got up and went round the corner to the men.  There are in fact four of them, the two meeker men, hanging on the other guys' witty words.

"I'm sorry to disturb you guys but..." Ryosuke started.

"Can I help you?" The first guy cut him off.

"Well, yes, I wish I hadn't overheard your conversation... but I did and I just think, you know..."

Ryosuke wasn't really a very convincing or frightening figure. Mirai didn't really know how to react at this progress.

"...the person you're talking about is a real person and I think she probably deserves a little bit more consideration, rather than having jerks like you drooling over her..." Ryosuke continued.

"Oh sod off, mate.  What are you, her dad?" The first guy said.

Mirai couldn't take it anymore. She marched up to Ryosuke's side and whipped him away without being recognized.

"I'm sorry." Ryosuke said when they were out of earshot.

"No, that's fine.  I love that you  tried... time was I'd have done the same." Mirai said, sighing.

They walk on in silence for a while and then,

"In fact, give me a second." Mirai said and she walks straight back to their table.

"Hi." She said, showing them her face.

"Oh my God..." The first guy said.

"I'm sorry about my friend..." She said sweetly and sarcastically. "he's very sensitive."

"No, look, I'm sorry..." The guy said.

"Please, please.. let's just leave it there.  I'm sure you meant no harm, and I'm sure it was just friendly banter and I'm sure you dicks are all the size of peanuts.  A perfect match for the size of your brains.  Enjoy your meal.  The tuna's really good." She said and then she walked away.

Mirai touched her temples when she reached Ryosuke who was grinning broadly at her.

"I shouldn't have done that.  I shouldn't have done that." Mirai said.

"No, you were brilliant." Ryosuke said as they walked on.

"I'm rash and I'm stupid and what am I doing with you?" Mirai said covering her face with her hands.

"I don't know, I'm afraid." Ryosuke said silently, frowning a bit.

"I don't know either." Mirai said looking at him.

They have arrived at the end of the arcade. They were now in front of Mirai's hotel.

"Here we are." Mirai said.

Mirai looked up to her suite's window while Ryosuke watch her.

"Do you want to come up?" Mirai said after a pause.

Ryosuke sighed. "There seem to be lots of reasons why I shouldn't."

"There are lots of reasons." Mirai agreed. "Do you want to come up?"

Ryosuke looked at her. It was a silent 'yes.'

"Give me five minutes." Mirai said as she entered the hotel.
He watched her go and as Mirai said, he waited there in the street.

It had been a long time now but still Mirai hasn't returned. Ryosuke decided he'd better go up, too. See what's keeping her.

Ryosuke came along the hotel corridor.  When he was in front of Mirai's room, he knocked.

Immediately, the door opened.

"Hiya." It was Mirai.

She looked a bit disheveled, seemingly fazed about something but Ryosuke didn't notice.

"Hi." Ryosuke said with a smile and he kissed her gently on the cheek.
"To be able to do that is such a wonderful thing." He said.

A pause. And then Mirai looked at Ryosuke as if saying something.

"You've got to go." She finally said.

Ryosuke was surprised. "Why?"

"Because my boyfriend, who I thought was already my ex-boyfriend and who I thought was in America, is in fact in the next room." Mirai said.

"Your boyfriend?" Ryosuke only said. He was shocked. It seems Mirai was as well, but she was trying to be calm.

"Yes..." She said.

"Who is it?" A male voice said from the other room.

And then he drifts into the room. Ryosuke knew him, Ryuusei Ryo. He is a very famous film star and looked the part: well built, very handsome.
"Ahm... room service." Ryosuke blurted out.

"How you doing?  I thought you guys all wore those penguin coats." Ryuusei said with no real interest.

"Well, yes... usually... I'd just changed to go home... but I thought I'd just deal with this final call." Ryosuke said.

"Oh great.  Could you do me a favor and try to get us some really cold water up here?" Ryuusei said.

"I'll see what I can do."

"Still, not sparkling." Ryuusei added.

Ryosuke didn't really know how a 'sparkling' water differs from a 'still, not sparkling' water but he said, anyway, "Absolutely.  Ice cold still water."
"And maybe you could just sayonara the dishes and empty the trash." Ryuusei continued to say.
"Right." Ryosuke said and he did just that.

He scooped up the two used plates and headed to the bin.

"Really... don't do that... I'm sure this is not his job." Mirai tried to say.

"I'm sorry.  Is this a problem?" Ryuusei asked Ryosuke.

"Ah... no.  It's fine." Ryosuke said.

"What's your name?" Ryuusei asked again.

"Ahm... Keito." Ryosuke said.

Ryuusei slipped him a thousand yen.

"Thank you, Keito." He said.

And then he turned to Mirai and smirked. "Hey... nice surprise, or nasty surprise?"

"Nice surprise." Mirai said automatically.

He kissed her. Mirai flinched.

"Liar." Ryuusei said. Turning to Ryosuke he said, "She hates surprises."

"What are you ordering?" Ryuusei asked Mirai.

"I haven't decided." Mirai just said. This had really become a nightmare.

"Well, don't over-do it.  I don't want people saying, 'There goes that famous actor with the big, fat girlfriend."' Ryuusei said and then he wandered off taking off his t-shirt.

"I better leave." Ryosuke said when Ryuusei was out of earshot.

Mirai just nodded.

"...this" Ryosuke continued. "...is a fairly strange reality to be faced with.  To be honest, I don't realize..."

"I'm sorry... I don't know what to say." Mirai said.

"I think goodbye is traditional." Ryosuke said, and then he continued to go without looking back at Mirai.

When Ryosuke reached the arcade, he sat. He didn't really care if people were looking at him. He was confused and annoyed and hurt. He was simply stunned.

AN: 'Yara Megu' - I told you this is from a movie right? In the movie they mentioned 'Meg Ryan' so I just made up a name from that.
And I made Ryuusei Ryo an *ss jerk.
