Prologue
It had been five years since then.
Five years since he found his dog, Rin; and took her home.
Five years since his surgery.
Five years since his niisan died.
Five years since those visions, since his eye hurt.
Tanaka Ainosuke has been living a peaceful life since then.
There were constant reminders of what happened of course. There were days where it seems he was back, there were nights of nightmares but still, he moved forward.
He was very contented with his life right now.
Sure it was rewarding to help others but he really didn't need all that stress.
He'll just aim for little things.
Ainosuke started crossing the street with Rin when the stoplight turned green.
He smiled as he saw the billboard in front of him.
'Must be nice to be like her.' It was a billboard of Kuroda Seira.
She wasn't an actress or a model, but she gained fame because she always does charity works. A few times, Ainosuke had seen her featured in news and other TV programs. Many appreciate her hard work and have recognized her because of that.
Oh, and because basically, she's a modern-day princess.
Many people look up to her. Ainosuke was one of those people. He really salutes her. She's also young and she's dedicated to helping other people.
"Tanaka-kun!"
Ainosuke glanced back, a bit surprised. He hadn't heard that voice in a long time.
"Kato-san." He said, smiling at the older man.
It had been so long. So so long since the last time.
But in that moment, it happened again.
And next thing he knew, he was on the ground, clutching his eye. It hurt so much.
He could hear Rin barking and then Kato-san calling out his name.
The last thing he saw was Kato-san's worried face swimming in front of him before it became all black.
---
It was a normal working day for Kato Takashi. And he was sure he would be doing menial works as always.
He wasn't complaining though, he was relieved the country is somewhat at peace.
He was running late that day. He was still about five meters away from the road when the stoplight turned red.
He ran faster, not wanting to be held off as he was already late.
But no luck, just when he reached the lane, the cars started moving again.
That was when he noticed him. Tanaka Ainosuke.
He hadn't seen the boy--- well, he's a young man now--- he hadn't seen him since ages. He smiled and called out his name.
He looked back at him and returned the smile. But then suddenly he clutched his head. It was as if he was in pain. And the next thing Kato saw, he was already laying on the ground, his dog barking as if crying for help.
He crossed the road as the stoplight turned red again.
"Tanaka!"
He had lost consciousness. Immediately, Kato called for an ambulance. No one would collapse just like that for no reason.
The ambulance arrived at the hospital ten minutes later.
Just then, another ambulance also arrived and with it, a few press people.
Kato followed as they transferred Tanaka to another stretcher and rushed him inside the hospital.
Just behind them, a young man --bloody, maybe from an accident-- around Tanaka's age, were also being transferred to another bed. Beside him was a young lady, face tear-tracked and filled with worry.
With a blink, Kato realized it was Kuroda Seira.
Disregarding that, he followed Tanaka and the nurses inside the emergency room.
---
The first thing Ainosuke saw as he opened his eyes were the ceiling. Very white ceiling.
Where is he?
He sat up. It was very quiet.
And then a flash. Kato-san.
What had happened?
He thought and then it struck him.
"Did I collapse?" He asked no one in particular.
So he must be in the hospital. Kato-san probably sent for an ambulance.
What had happened to him then?
He remembered he suddenly felt pain on his temples and then... nothing...
He looked around his room.
Empty. That was to be expected.
Just then, the door opened.
Ainosuke was surprised to see Kato-san.
"Kato-san..."
"Oh, good, you're awake... I'll call the doctor."
And before he could say anything to him, he was gone.
Ainosuke then, stood up and went out, intending to find Kato-san.
It was already night, it seems.
He was surprised when he saw so many people outside his room. Media people, it seems. Many were holding cameras.
Ainosuke tried to maneuver his way out the crowd. It was a feat since the hallway was narrow but a while later he was able to be free from the throngs of reporters and journalists.
And now that Ainosuke looked back to where he came from, he realized he didn't know from which room.
He sighed. He should just have stayed inside his room. Well, he couldn't think straight then, really.
He decided he'll just have to find Kato-san. He didn't want to go through the crowd again.
He went to the floor's nurse' quarters. But he couldn't find Kato-san there. So instead, he just asked for 'Tanaka Ainosuke's room.' Weird to ask for your own room, but well, he didn't know.
The nurse that he talked to seems to be new. She was a bit clumsy and panicky but finally she gave him his room number and Ainosuke made his way back.
Still, there was a crowd in front of his room, but it has somehow become smaller.
'I wonder why? Is there a celebrity or something?'
"Where is she, do you suppose?" One of the reporters asked another.
"I don't know, do I? Or else I'd already be there. They won't say what her room number is!"
Ainosuke just ignored this and tried to go to his room. It was smoother this time, fortunately.
He tried to open the door but it was locked.
"Eh?"
But then there was a click. He tried again. The door opened.
He entered the room but stopped with a half-step, it wasn't his room.
"Hai?" A young woman had welcomed him.
"Ah, sorry, I must have entered the wrong room." Ainosuke said.
He was about to go when he saw her. He looked back.
Surely, it was her.
Kuroda Seira.
She was... crying. Her hands holding the patient's hands, whoever that was.
The door closed and there was a click again. The door was locked once more.
So that's why there is press here. Kuroda Seira is here.
Ainosuke really couldn't remove the image of Kuroda Seira crying from his head.
"Ainosuke!" He looked up and smiled a bit. It was Shuhei.
"Tanaka-kun! There you are!"
"Shuhei... Kato-san..."
"Where were you? Come on, sensei is already in your room." Kato-san said, approaching Ainosuke.
"Are you feeling okay now?" Shuhei asked, patting him on the back. "I only heard what happened. I escaped from work--"
Ainosuke let him dragged him back to his room.
-
Ainosuke was no alone in his room again.
Kato-san had gone once he was back inside his room. Shuhei, his best friend, had gone too after a while. He would be missed at work.
According to the doctor, they can't see anything wrong with him at the moment so they had advice that he spends the night there in the hospital for more observations.
Ainosuke didn't mind, no one was waiting for him at home. Rin, maybe, but Shuhei had taken her for the meantime.
-
He had been lying on his bed, trying to sleep for a while now but it was no use.
It was already late in the night.
He was really bored. He gave up trying to sleep and sat up, turning his night light on.
It was a good thing that Shuhei-kun had brought him a pencil and a sketchpad or else he'd die of boredom.
He took his sketchpad and thought... He didn't have anything in mind that he wanted to draw so he just drew the nearest thing there.
A vase with flowers.
It was fairly simple, he was done in five minutes and then he had searched for other things to draw.
After a while, he had let his hand move, not really thinking about what he was scribbling. He had thought about the day's events.
Earlier, he had gone to his work as per usual. It was a normal day.
He had come home in the afternoon and had decided to walk Rin before his part-time job. But then he collapsed.
Frankly, Ainosuke didn't know why that happened. He assumes he was just exhausted... but his eye was hurting then... then again, he was thinking of the past that time. Maybe it was just a sort of relapse.
And then he woke up here in this room.
And after more random happenings, he had seen her.
Kuroda Seira.
Still then, Ainosuke couldn't remove the image of her crying.
It was just so beautiful yet sad at the same time; he couldn't really understand how he felt then.
He sighed and took a glance at his sketchbook. He was surprise to see the image of Kuroda Seira there.
Just like how he saw her, she was crying in her drawing but this time it wasn't sad. It was as if she was crying out of happiness.
Ainosuke shook his head. What was he doing?
He dropped his sketchpad and lied back down his bed.
But still, sleep wouldn't take him. Sighing yet again, he sat up and then stood. Maybe he'll just take a walk outside... maybe a change of scene would help him be a bit.
As he went out, he saw the moonlight. It was a full moon. The moon was lighting up the hospital hallways brightly.
He smiled and decided to go to the rooftop to get a better look.
-
Surely, there was a clear view of the moon on the rooftop.
"Wow..." Ainosuke breathed, amazed. It was very beautiful. Ainosuke wished he had brought his sketchpad with him.
He was almost by the rooftop's edge when he noticed that there was someone else there.
With a jolt he couldn't understand, he realized who it was.
Kuroda Seira.
But there was something different from this Kuroda Seira to the last time Ainosuke saw her.
She wasn't crying now. She wasn't even teary.
She was smiling, albeit a bit sadly, and looking at the moon with a nostalgic look.
The moon shone through her face. The moonlight made her skin looks as if it was glowing, it looks very smooth. Her eyes were reflecting the sky. Her lips curved a bit into a small smile. She looked as if she was very much contented right then.
It was a picture-perfect scene.
But then, as if feeling his stare, she looked back and Ainosuke felt another jolt.
She smiled at him and made a little bow in greeting.
Ryosuke, snapping himself out of his trance, awkwardly bowed back.
"You..." She said as recognition dawning on her face... "Earlier..." she trailed off.
"Ah, hai." Ainosuke said, fumbling a bit. "I'm sorry about that."
She smiled and shook her head.
They both went silent again as Seira turned back to stare at the moon.
Ainosuke moved towards the railings of the rooftop, close to her.
She looked sideways and smiled again. "It's a beautiful night." She said.
"Ah..." Ryosuke said, looking at the full moon.
"You're a patient here?" Seira asked after a while.
"Hai... I'm in the next room." Ainosuke said.
"So it's easily understandable that you enter our room by mistake." She said. She seems to be in a good mood.
Ainosuke smiled as well and gave a small nod.
"The moon tonight... It's really something, ne?" Ainosuke said.
Seira nodded.
It was a bit weird, talking to Kuroda Seira like that in the rooftop, but though they seem to struggle to keep a conversation, there wasn't any uneasy feeling.
They were silent for a while more and then Seira had faced sideways to Ainosuke.
"I need to get going." She said and gave another bow.
Ainosuke just bowed back and Seira had made her way towards the stairs.
Ainosuke watched her but then she stopped as she reached the stairs.
She looked back at him.
"I'm sorry, I forgot to introduce myself." She said quickly with a look as if she had been very very rude. "I'm--"
"Kuroda Seira." Ainosuke said, smiling. "I'm sorry I haven't introduced myself as well. I'm Tanaka Ainosuke."
---
The following day, Ainosuke had spent all his morning for his tests. They did many things... or maybe he just hadn't had a check up for long.
After his tests, his doctor had talked to him. He asked him the general stuffs. About his diet, about any injury, recent or not... he also asked a bit about his eye transplant.
And after jutting some notes, the doctor had left saying he would be coming back a bit later.
At noon, a nurse had come in his room and brought him lunch. He ate silently. And after that, he had lied down his bed, feeling a bit tired. It wasn't very comfortable having people poking at you.
A while later a couple of nurses had come in his room, seemingly to get his plate and to check up on him.
"She's really pretty, ne? And she's very nice." One of them said. Ainosuke perked up.
"Ah... She's really like a fairytale princess, ne? But the poor girl... was that her lover?" Another one said.
"I think so." The first one answered. "I saw her crying her eyes out in the emergency room. And now the guy's in coma. And it doesn't seem like there's much hope."
"What had happened to him?" The other one asked again.
"Car accident. And I heard he had just come back from abroad. They hadn't seen each other for years and then this. The poor girl. It doesn't seem much like a fairytale story, ne?"
"Ah... And I know she don't have parents anymore, right? Mother died when she was little and her father died just a bit after..." The nurses’ voices faded away as the door closed.
Ainosuke lied on his bed very awake. He was sure they were talking about her.
He didn't know half the things they said.
So that was what happened.
And Ainosuke remembered how she cried yesterday.
She had been clutching on a patient's hand. That must be him.
But then he remembered how she looked just last night.
She wasn't crying then.
She was smiling, even.
"She's a strong girl..." Ainosuke said out loud, admiration for the young princess surging through him.
-
As his doctor said, he had returned to his room around afternoon.
He had told him the result of some of his tests.
All seems to be normal, according to his doctor.
He could go home that afternoon. And he'd just have to go back for the other test's results.
Ainosuke was thankful for this. He didn't feel much comfortable in the hospital.
The hospital reminds him of what had happened before.
As soon as the doctor was gone, Ainosuke stood up to change to his clothes.
Once changed, he set off to the lobby so he could arrange his release immediately.
But as he steps out, the first thing he saw stopped him.
It was her.
She looked quite surprised as well, but she smiled all the same.
"Tanaka-san, konnichiwa." She greeted. It seems she was just going back to the next room.
"Ah, Kuroda-san, konnichiwa."
She looked at him. "So you're being released now? Yokatta, ne..." She said, smiling graciously.
"Ah. Hai..." He just said.
She smiled and bowed at him again. "Thanks for yesterday. It was very nice meeting you."
And then she continued to the next room.
Ainosuke didn't really like that. She was saying goodbye. Well, okay, he supposed that was normal. But that doesn't make it likable.
Sighing and wondering why he felt that way, he too, continued his way down the lobby.
To be continued...
