Chapter 13

It had been a very gloomy night at their house.

Ryosuke had so many things on his mind and Ryuu had again, started sulking by the window. Ryosuke knew the guy never stopped blaming himself for what happened and he was touched that he wanted to help him. But then again, he was currently annoyed at the guy because of recent news from her sister.

The next day, as always, Ryosuke went to Chisato-san in the morning for breakfast and then came straight to his book store.

By noon, he was again stuck doing the accounts in a dark small room with files in it.

That was when Yuto popped his head in.

"I have to disturb you when you're cooking the books, but there's a delivery." Yuto said.

"Yuto, can't you just deal with this yourself?" He asked. Anything can trigger his annoyance right then.

"But it's not for the shop. It's for you." Yuto said.

He sighed. "Fine."

They headed out, Yuto behind Ryosuke, incomprehensively rubbing his hands... he seems to be nervous.

Ryosuke went to the store and then stopped.

There stood Shida Mirai in a simple blue skirt and top.

"Hi." she said.

"Hello." Ryosuke said plainly.

"You disappeared." Mirai said.

"Yes... I'm sorry." He said. "I had to leave... I didn't want to disturb you."

"Well... how have you been?" She said, smiling at him. She, too, seemed to be nervous.

"Fine. Everything much the same. Whereas you... I've watched in wonder. Awards, glory..." Ryosuke said, no emotion in his voice.

"Oh no. It's all nonsense, believe me." Mirai said. "I had no idea how much nonsense it all was but nonsense it all is..."

She was definitely nervous. But she kept smiling at him.

"Well, yesterday was our last day filming and so I'm just off... but I brought you this from home, and... "

There was a big wrapped parcel, flat, leaning against a bookshelf.

"I thought I'd give it to you." she finished.

"Oh. Thank you. Shall I..." Ryosuke trailed but Mirai cut him off.

"No, don't open it yet... I'll be embarrassed." She said.

"Okay..." Ryosuke said. "well, thank you. I don't know what it's for. But thank you anyway."

"I actually had it in my apartment in New York and just thought you'd... but, when it came to it, I didn't know how to call you... having behaved so... badly, twice. So it's been just sitting in the hotel... I'm staying Park Hyatt Tokyo Hotel. But then... you came, so I figured... the thing is... the thing is..." Mirai said, stuttering.

"What's the thing?" Ryosuke asked.

"Yes. The thing is... I have to go away today but I wondered, if I didn't, whether you might let me see you a bit... or, a lot maybe... see if you could...like me again..." she finally said, looking straight at his eyes.

There was a pause. Ryosuke didn't expect this at all.

"But yesterday..." He said. "that actor asked you who I was... and you just dismissed me out of hand... I heard... you had a microphone... I had headphones."

"You expect me to tell the truth about my life to just anyone in the industry?" Mirai said.

There was a pause. Ryosuke just looking at her. Mirai looking back, hopeful.

She was awaiting an answer.

Ryosuke sigh.

"Mirai... Look... I'm a fairly level-headed guy. Not often in and out of love. But..."

Ryosuke trailed off, searching for the right words.

He sighed again.

"...can I just say 'no' to your kind request and leave it at that?"

There was another pause.

"Yes, that's fine." Mirai finally said. "Of course. I...you know... of course... I'll just... be getting along then... nice to see you." Mirai said, turning to go.

"The truth is..." Ryosuke said quickly. He wanted to leave it at that, but the look on Mirai's face. He felt he must at least explain.

"...with you, I'm in real danger." Ryosuke continued. "It was like a perfect situation... but my relatively inexperienced heart would, I think, not recover if I was once again... cast aside, which I would absolutely expect to be. There are too many pictures of you everywhere, too many films. You'd go and I'd, well, die... basically."

"I see." Mirai said, taking it all in. "That reality is a real 'no,' isn't it?"

"We're too different." Ryosuke said. "Everyone in the world knows who you are. My mother has trouble remembering my name."

"Okay. Fine. Fine. Good decision." Mirai said, smiling a force smile.

Another pause and her expression soften. She smiled; this time a real, sad smile.

"The fame thing isn't really real, you know." She said, tears stinging her eyes. "Don't forget... I'm also just a girl. Standing in front of a boy. Asking him to love her."

Mirai looked at him. And then she leaned towards him and kissed him on the cheek.

"Bye." She said as finally, tears started to flow.

And then turned and leave.

Leaving him.

AN: real smooth, Ryosuke. /sarcastic.
