And now that I'm strong I have figured out
How this world turns cold and it breaks through my soul
And I know I'll find deep inside me I can be the one

Chapter 8

A phone rang.  Chinen stirred.

He slowly opened his eyes.

Umika.

He smiled as he gaze at her, sleeping soundly besides him.

He slowly sat up, careful not to wake her up.

He then reached for his phone on the bedside table.

He frowned when he saw who was calling.

It was his manager. He sighed in resignation and answered, cautiously standing up.

"Chinen-kun. Are you coming to work today?" His manager said without preamble.

"Uhm, I--"

"You really can't take a leave today." He was cut off. "Chinen-kun, this is a very important time for you and your bandmates. I will expect you in an hour, okay?" His manager said in one breath and hang up on him.

Chinen sighed. He didn't want to go. He didn't want to leave Umika.

Suddenly, his phone rang again.

It was Yuto.

He answered his phone. "Hello?"

"Ohayou, Chii!" Yuto said energetically.

"Ohayou..." Chinen said, not feeling as energetic.

"Chii, are you still in your apartment?" Yuto asked.

"Ah, hai... Why?"

"Me and Yama-chan is coming to fetch you! Just to be sure, since you were sick yesterday. We're coming now." Yuto said and for the second time, the line went dead to Chinen.

He groaned and looked at the clock. It was 6AM.

"Work?"

Chinen hadn't noticed Umika.

He smiled at her. "Sorry, did I wake you up?"

She shook her head, smiling. "Are you going today?" She asked again.

He frowned. "Hai... but I'll try to go back soon. I'll just show my face." He said.

She shook her head again. "It's okay, Yuri. I know you have responsibilities."

His frowned deepend. "I don't want to leave."

"I'll be fine." She said. "Go get ready."

Chinen hesitantly nodded.

-

There was a knock on the door.

"Chii!!" It was Yamada's voice.

Chinen sighed.

Umika giggled. He pouted at her.

"Don't worry." She mouthed. "Itterashai."

He smiled. "Ittekimasu." He mouthed back.

"Coming!" He called to Yuto and Yamada. They were still insistently knocking on his door.

He turned to her again and smiled his goodbye.

But Umika leaned in and kissed him.

He stared at her, wide-eyed.

"I.. I thought.." Chinen said, forgetting to whisper.

She blushed and then said in a smaller voice, "Maybe I stopped caring as well."

He grinned and he leaned in to kiss again.

"Chii! You there??"

He grinned one last time and then took off.

-

Chinen's cheerfulness didn't last long. The more he stayed at work, the more he got worried. He didn't want to be away from Umika too long. He was afraid he'll go home and find his apartment empty.

"Are you okay, Chii?" Yabu asked. Chinen had been distracted the whole time he was there.

"Yeah..." Chinen lied.

Yabu frowned at him.

"Are you still sick?" He asked.

"You look ill." Inoo, who was sitting besides Yabu, commented.

Chinen didn't respond.

Honestly he wasn't feeling well. He felt sick with worry, dread, and fear.

A while later Yabu had approached him again.

"Chii, you can go home now." He said.

"Eh?"

"I asked Julie-san. I told her it wouldn't do if you fell sick. Honestly, they're overworking you guys. Yamada and Yuto, too." He said, shaking his head.

Chinen smiled at Yabu. "Gee, thanks."

Yabu patted him on his shoulder, smiling. "No problem, get going now before they change their minds."

-

Chinen smiled when he had finaly saw his apartment. He had took a cab so he could reach home more quickly.

He paid the driver as he got off the cab.

He went in front of his door and took out his key. He inserted it to the lock but something was odd.

The door was open.

His heart seemed to plummet.

Cautiously, he opened the door. Everything was the same. No mess, no signs of anything strange happening.

"Umika?" He called.

No one answered.

He threw his things on to the sofa and ran up his room. Something was definitely wrong.

He opened the door to his room and his eyes widen.

Umika was there.

But with her, was three other people. Three young men clad in white. There was no doubt in Chinen's mind that they were angels as well.

-

"Umika!" the human called. And all four them landed their eyes on him.

"Yuri-kun..."

At the name, Ryunosuke had looked at Umika meaningfully.

He had remembered their conversation just before the human had come.

"It's time to go." Haruma had told her.

Umika had nodded sadly.

"Can I ask a question, though?" She asked them.

"What is it?" Haruma asked gently.

"Will he... when I'm gone, will he remember me?" She asked.

"No." Haruma said. "This was a mistake. Of course under the circumstances it was unavoidable, but that is why the three of us is here. We will correct everything."

Ryunosuke nodded and said, "I will erase his memories and all traces of your stay here."

She smiled then. "Yokatta..."

Haruma looked at both Ryunosuke and Shougo. It was time.

They both nodded. And the four of them started glowing.

"Yuri-kun..." Umika called again. "I never blamed you for what happened so please don't worry about me anymore. It wasn't your fault... And I'm sorry I have to leave you again..." She said.

Chinen's eyes widen as realization hit him.

Images of that night fourteen years ago. The night of flames, fears and shouting. The night his best friend died. The night he had broken his promise of always protecting her. Umika.

She was Umika all along.

One of the guys, Ryunosuke, raised a hand at him. He looked pained and unsure.

Chinen had felt dizzy then, it was as if everything was going in circles.

"Umika..." He had uttered her name as the world go black.

-

Chinen sat up dazedly.

It was already morning.

His head was aching bad. He groaned.

What had happened to him?

Suddenly there was a burst of wind and his windows opened.

And he remembered.

Everything.

Earthquake.

Kiss.

Angels.

Memories.

Umika.

He stood up hastily.

Umika. Umika's gone.

"No... No way..." He breathed placing his hands on his face.

-

Chinen had thought that he might as well have gone mad.

He wasn't very sure that it really happened, that it wasn't just a dream.

There was no trace of her existence. None at all.

The clothes he had bought for her was nowhere to be found.

There were no pictures or videos on his phone.

The blood stain on his jacket wasn't there even.

He had asked Yuto about the earthquake and the news. But he had told him it was just the usual quake. Everyone else was convinced of this.

But still, it felt so real.

Those two weeks with her felt so real.

Her smile, her voice, the touch of her lips. Everything was real to him.

Memories of them together, so real, so vivid.

It couldn't have been just a dream.

And the feeling in his chest.

His yearning, his pain.

Chinen clutched at his heart.

"It feels so real." He said in a whisper.

"Eh?" He heard Yuto said, distracting him.

Chinen looked at him.

"What is it?" Yama-chan asked.

"I don't know myself." Yuto said, looking at his digital camera. "What's this? I don't remember taking this shot."

Chinen's eyes widen and he made his way to them.

He took the camera and looked.

"It's real." He breathed.

There, in Yuto's camera was solid proof. It was the picture of that falling star he had taken just after the earthquake.

It was a picture of the sky, and just right by the cloud, there was a pair of pure white wings.

-

Chinen opened his apartment door.

"Tadaima." He had called out.

And for a moment, he had imagined hearing her voice.

"Okaeri."

He smiled bitterly at the silence.

He made his way to his room.

He went straight to his window and looked up at the sky.

"Umika..." He called softly.

He clutched at his heart again.

"It hurts, Umika..."

Chinen had let the tears fell.

"Umika..." He called desperately again, tears flowing from his eyes.

He was unashamed of this tears. It was all for her.

It was all for Umika.

"Yuri-kun..."

Chinen looked up, wide-eyed.
