Mirai's POV

He first told me during that last day of filming for Tantei Gakuen Q.

"I like you." He said simply.

I was shocked then. It wasn't the first time someone confessed to me, but I never imagine I'll hear it from him.

I grinned stupidly then. I liked what I heard. And of course, I understand perfectly what he meant.

I smiled at him and he smiled back, hopeful.

"You're so sweet." I told him. "I like you, too, Yama-chan. You and Miki are my best friends!"

It was a subtle 'No.'

I knew I broke his heart. I can see it from his eyes.

-

He was still a friend even with what I did. Though not as much as with Miki, I did call and mail him at times, even though our drama was finished.

He was a little awkward at first, but gradually we came back to how we used to.

And then we found out that we'll be attending the same school. We were also put in the same class.

I was thrilled. I was happy I could meet him regularly again. And Miki would also be our classmate. It was like being back to TGQ set.

We begun being more closer than ever. I was the only girl in class that he was comfortable with. He said it was because I was like a boy.

Before the first semester ended, he said it again.

"I like you." He said, a hint of fear in his eyes. "Would you go out with me?" He added.

I smiled at him gently.

He waited.

"Yama-chan, I'm sorry but no."

And for the second time, I knew I broke his heart.

-

In second semester, he became very distant. He never approached me if it's just me. There's always our big group of friends surrounding us; in between us.

I became more close to Miki, and ironically, to Yuto.

When that happened, he started hanging around more with our other classmates.

He became distant to Yuto a well. I felt guilty 'cause it might have been because Yuto and I became close.

He felt very far away from me, but I was always watching him.

I was watching as he became close to Mariya-chan.

I watched how they started falling for each other.

Unexpectedly, the next thing I heard was that they were already a couple.

They were so happy, everyone smiles whenever they see them together.

Even me.

But not Yuto.

He always frown whenever he sees them.

And his frown would always deepen whenever he sees me smile at them.

But he didn't say anything to me or to Yama-chan. It was as if we had a silent agreement.

Honestly, I was happy for Yama-chan. I could see how happy he was. And Mariya as well. She was also a dear friend. It was the most beautiful thing that could have happened.

But even beautiful things end.

One word brought many whispers. One picture, many stories.

It got out, and everything went downhill for them.

Mariya was forced to drop from school and then she was fired from work.

I saw how this broke Yama-chan. He was blaming himself. He love Mariya very much. I know how this must have pained him.

Mariya acted toughed in front of us. I was very awed with her. She was so strong. She was so brave.

Unlike me.

Unbidding, a thought had crossed my mind. 'That could have been us.'

And then there was a change. A change in Yama-chan, a change in Yuto, a change in me.

Yama-chan became more workaholic. I knew it was his way to cope with what happened.

Yuto started hanging out with him again, silently supporting him.

I, too, started talking more often to him again, trying to comfort him subtly, trying to cheer him up somehow.

We were back to before. I was his best friend again.

And just a month after what happened to them, he said it again,

"I like you, Mirai. Please go out with me."

It was too obvious what he was trying to do. There was too much hurt, too much longing, too much anger in his eyes.

I smiled at him understandingly.

"No, Yama-chan. I don't think it would help if you made me your rebound." I told him honestly.

He was expecting it. We both knew he still love Mariya. He chuckled at me then.

"Thanks for always setting me straight."

-

Slowly, he started moving on. Not from loving Mariya, I knew, but from everything that hurts him.

He was slowly accepting it. I was proud I was there for him during those times.

I help him with composing 'Shinku.' It was for Mariya, of course. And I felt that the song really helped him. It was a sort of closure for them.

-

Slowly our other friends began finding love as well. Suzuka and Yuto, Umika and Jingi, Shougo too, introduced us to his nonshowbiz girlfriend.

Sometimes I wish I had someone as well. But it was a rare occasion. I don't really think I'm ready for that yet.

I am looking forward to it though.

-

During our third year, Yama-chan began to like Nozomi. I was glad because he had finally moved forward.

Nozomi was hesitating at first but Yama-chan was persistent. And finally, just before summer break, Nozomi finally agreed to try it.

They got along very well. They were quite happy for a few months.

But Nozomi said their relationship wasn't gong anywhere. Yama-chan agreed.

He said nothing really changed between them from being friends except for the kisses and the "I love yous"

And so they had a mutual break up and they ended their relationship in good terms.

-

Soon, it was our graduation.

There was a bittersweet feeling in my chest that day. It was an ending in some way and a beginning in a bigger way.

All of us were a bit fearful to face our new life but we knew we were ready.

On that day, Ryosuke pulled me into a corner.

Holding both my hands and looking straight at my eyes he said,

"Mirai, I love you."

I smiled at him. A real smile. It was just that simple and cliche phrase but it was the sweetest thing I've ever been told to.

"Thank you so much, Ryosuke." I said.

He pursed his lips then, but he was still smiling.

"I feel there's a 'but' coming." He said, almost laughing.

"Sorry..." I only said.

He still smiled at me, and silently nodded.

"Let's go back?" he said, and he pulled me back to our line.

But even with what I did (yet again), he never stopped holding my hand until the ceremony ended.

-

We never met much when we were out of the school. We still get in touch. We send each other mails and sometimes even call each other. We also always give each other birthday gifts. Well, since we were born almost the same day, it would really be hard to forget each other's birthday.

But Ryosuke said that wasn't the case. He said it was because I am his best friend.

Some years after our graduation, in the middle of the night, he called me. This was not unusual. With our work, we mostly only have time at midnight.

"Ryosuke?" I answered my phone.

"Mirai." He said softly on the other line.

I smiled when I heard his voice.

"What is it?" I asked him.

He was quiet for a while and I knew at once that something was wrong.

"What happened?" I asked worriedly.

"I'm sorry..." He said.

I waited.

"You know about Chika, right?" He asked. Chika is Ryosuke's current girlfriend. She's also in the industry. He had been calling me oftentimes about her, asking for advice or just wanting someone to talk to. They had been been rowing for the past month.

"What happened? Are you two okay?" I asked.

"She broke up with me... Just now." He said slowly.

"Are you okay?" I asked at once.

"Yes..." He said and somehow I could hear his smile in his voice. "But what I'm worried about is you..."

"Me?" I said, surprised.

He went silent once more as if thinking how to word it.

"Well, you kinda got involve in our argument..." He said cautiously. "She said I love you more than I love her."

Silence.

"I'm so sory..." I decided to say.

"It's not your fault. I'm the one who should be sorry. I'm just afraid you'll be involve in another rumor with this. I'm really sorry."

"It's fine." I said. "You don't have to worry about that. I'm used to stuffs like that." I said, trying to sound cheerful. Ryosuke had this incurable self-blame tendencies.

"But---"

"Don't worry about it." I said quickly. "What's important is that we both know what's the truth."

Silence again.

"If you say so." He finally said.

"I'm sorry again." I said.

I'm sorry for being a coward.

I'm sorry for hurting you.

I'm so sorry for everything.

"It's okay." He said.

-

What Ryosuke feared happened right after that night. With Chika being a famous actress as well, it was not a big surprise. The media had a field day with the assumed love triangle. What's more is that a paparazzi picture of me and Ryosuke had been leaked just last month.

I didn't gave any comment when I was interviewed. Honestly, I know it would only make things worst.

Ryosuke had defended me, though. He told the press that we are friends, that we've been friends since we were thirteen and that I am almost his sister.

Chii had backed him up. He said it shouldn't be a big surprise since we were high school classmates. He also said that I was one of their closests friends.

The news died down after some time. But of couse, like other news like this, it still lingers.

-

I looked up, surprised. I couldn't believe I'd met him today.

He smiled when he recognized me.

"Mirai-chan."

I smiled back. "Yuto-kun."

He invited me for coffee. I agreed. I did miss this guy. We haven't seen each other for so long.

"How are you?" he asked, sipping to his coffee.

I knew he was talking abou the scandal. "I'm fine." I said.

"How about Ryosuke?" I asked.

He chuckled. "I think he's too fine for someone who had just came from a break up."

I hesitantly laughed at that. "How about Chika-san?" I asked softly.

He took his time answering and first ate a spponful of cake.

"She's also fine." He said. "And no, she doesn't really blame you, but she is a bit furious with you."

I nodded. I didn't really know what he meant but it was natural for Chika to be angry with me.

"And I agree with her." He said.

I looked up at him in question.

"Her exact words was, 'It has always been her. I never really had his heart. But I believe I won. Because I took the risk.'" He smled at me.

I looked away.

I heard him sighed.

"What are you waiting for, Mirai? This had been going on for too long already." He said sounding exasperated.

I still didn't reply.

"You're such a coward and a hypocrite. Weren't you the one who said I should take my chances with Suzu? Look at us now." He said in a teasing voice.

I hesitantly smiled at that.

"I'm just..."

"Stubborn." He finished for me.

I giggled. "Yes and yes, I am also a coward and a hypocrite. But I don't think that it's right."

"What isn't right?" Yuto asked, gently.

Just as I was about to talk, the door of the coffee shop opened and in he came.

I looked at Yuto, wide-eyed.

"You called him??" I whispered frantically.

But Yuto had raised his hand and called Ryosuke to our table.

"This isn't really a good time, Yuto. With the news just---"

"I don't really trust your judgement with time, Mirai-chan." Yuto said to me. "But I know you two definitely need to talk."

He stood up then and pulled Ryosuke to our table.

"Talk." He ordered and then he walked out the coffee shop.

We were silent as Ryosuke took the seat the Yuto had just vacated. Both of us were in disguise, but still, it was too risky.

'I took the risk.' I remembered Chika's words.

"Hi." Ryosuke said awkwardly.

I trieid to smile back at him.

"How are you?" I asked.

"Fine," He said, grinning and now relaxing. "You?"

I shrug. "Same as always."

"I'm sorry about this. I... actually I didn't know you were with Yuto. He just said to meet here and well..." he said.

I shook my head. "It's okay. We can never win against Yuto." I said, laughing a bit.

We did talked, as Yuto told us too. But it was far from the issue. We both were tiptoeing around it, but I like it that way. I don't really wanna talk about it.

Like old friends, we chatted about our current life. We tried to catch up with one another. We never noticed the time ticking.

"Eh?" Ryosuke suddenly said, looking out the coffee shop.

I followed his gaze and realized that it was already night.

"Wow, we've been talking for hours." He said. I laughed.

I smiled at him. "Well, I did miss you."

He smiled back. "Yeah. Me too. But we should get going. Thank goodness it was our off."

He stood up then. And I understood that it was time to go.

"I'll take you home." He suddenly said.

"No. It's alright." I said quickly.

He pouted playfully. "Come on, Mirai-chan, I wanna show off my new car!" He said.

I laughed and in the end I gave in.

He did show off, mind you. He was just like a child. I remembered when he had shown me a picture of his dog so many years ago in TGQ set. It was just like that time.

The ride to my home was quick and comfortable. We arrived at home in about fifteen minutes.

"Thank you." I told him as I prepared to go.

"Mirai." He suddenly called.

"Hm?" I sounded, looking back at him.

"You know, right?" He said seriously. "What Chikai said was true..." He said softly.

I didn't know what to say, but he continued, relentlessly.

"I love you, Mirai."

I just nodded and went silent.

"Still that answer..." He said, chuckling to himself. I didn't like that. "Why?" He asked softly.

I shook my head and went out his car and in to my house without looking back at him.

But before I had closed the car door I heard him mutter, "It's nearing..."

I didn't hear his car go until hours later.

-

"Bye." I said as I hung my phone. It was Ryosuke, as usual.

Ryosuke acted the same even after that. It was as if that night never happened. I had planned to avoid him, but he didn't gave me the chance to do so.

Not that we always see each other. We were both busy. But almost everyday, he would call or mail me and we would talk about the most trivial things.

"Ryosuke again?" I looked up at the voice.

It was my Dad.

I smiled and said, "Hai."

I was surprised he entered my room and sat on my bed.

"How is he?" He asked.

"Just fine..." I said, still a bit bewildered.

"No new rumors?" He asked and I giggled. He was very much affected that last scandal with Ryosuke. Some Chika-fans had been very rude.

"No." I told my dad. "No new rumors." Actually, after Chika, Ryosuke hadn't dated anyone.

"No new girlfriends?" My dad continued to ask.

"No." I said.

"You sure?" He asked stubbornly.

"Yes." I said, laughing now. "I would have known. Ryosuke always confides to me."

"Do you know about his first love?" He suddenly asked.

I looked up at that. "Do you know?" I asked him back.

"Yes." He said, looking away. "We've talked about it. You know, during your first drama before."

Cryptic, but I got the message.

"You talked about it?" I asked.

"Yes. He asked for advice." He said.

"And your advice was?" I asked him.

"Well, honestly I was annoyed then. But I was also awed because he, er, was brave enough to approach me about that and so I told him the best advice I could give." He said.

"Which is?" I prodded.

He shrugged. "That I can't really stop him from liking you." He said straightforwardly.

I laughed.

"But it seems the advice didn't really help..." He said.

I didn't answer.

My dad went silent for a while.

And I thought that was it but then he sighed exasperatedly and turned to me.

"Do you love him?" He asked, and I could almost laughed at the paranoid Dad in front of me.

"Of course I do, he's my best friend." I told him.

He shook his head and stood up, walking out my room.

I heard him mutter, "Showbiz..." before closing the door.

-

I celebrated my 23rd birthday at work.

I was in location for my drama.

They had sang me a birthday song and we ate cake and after that we were back to working. I wasn't complaining. I love my work.

We finished with the day almost ending.

And I saw it again. His white sports car.

Ryosuke was also there, leaning his back on his car. He waved when he saw me.

I hesitantly waved back. I approached him.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"I wanted to talk." He said simply. "And I wanted to greet you. Happy Birthday Mirai."

I smiled at that. "You already greeted me." I told him. It was true, he was the first one who did. At exactly 12 o'clock, just after his birthday.

He just grinned and gestured to his car.

I obliged and got on.

"I'll take you home as well..." He said as he sat on the driver's seat.

"Because you like showing off." I said playfully.

"Yes." He said, grinning.

He started the engine and the car pulled away from the car park.

"So, what did you wanna talk about?" I asked.

"Our life..." He said mysteriously.

I raised a brow at him. He smiled.

And then he took a left turn. That was when I realized that we were going the wrong way.

"Where are we going?" I asked him.

"Just a quick detour." He said.

We were silent as Ryosuke drived. I gaped as we reached our destination.

It was the location on TGQ's last episode.

"Ryosuke?"

"I know you know what I'm about to say. And I'm betting that your answer will be the same." He said quickly.

"But Mirai, I think I'm ready now." He told me and then smiled.

"I love you, Mirai." He said. "You've known that for years now. I love you. Would you hate to be my wife?"

I looked at him, wide-eyed.

And I couldn't help but smile at the slight humor he implied. I really have mixed feelings. I didn't really know how to react.

He waited, smiling gently at me.

And so I gave him my answer. The answer he had heard so many times.

"No, Ryosuke. No, I wouldn't hate to be your wife." I told him.

He beamed at me and then took my hand in his.

Yes, it seems we are ready.

But then he sighed.

"You know Mirai-chan, I have been applying to be your first...." He said, pouting. "Why did you make it so hard?"

"You really don't have the right to say that. You've had so many girlfriends." I teased.

"I wanted you to be my first, you know. But you broke my young heart." He said, pouting more.

I laughed.

"I'm sorry..." I said. "But I didn't really wanna be your first."

"You were my first love." He said.

I smiled. "You were mine, as well." I said softly.

"But I was a coward, and a hypocrite. I over-calculate things and I am idealistically naive." I said. "I hated to think of being your first and being just that. 'Cause I wanted to be your last."

He shook his head exasperatedly but tighten his grip on my hand.

"You're cheesy." He said, teasingly.

I just shrugged. It was true.

"You don't love me, do you?" He said, in that question form again.

I laughed.

"No." I said again. "I love you, Yamada Ryosuke."

He grinned like dork and then smiled at me.

He then smirked. "You'll hate it if I kissed you right now, won't you?"

"No..." I said softly, smiling.

He grinned triumphantly, and then leaned towards me.

He dipped his lips to mine, slowly, gently.

He leaned back and then smiled at me.

"You'd hate to go to the city hall tonight and pass our marriage certificate, would you?" He asked again.

I pursed my lips, trying not to laugh.

"Yes." I told him. "I've been dreaming about my wedding day since I was 7, Yamada Ryosuke. You have to make it special."

AN:
-and yes, i've forgotten what the plot is halfway through the story. lol. a fail is a fail. /sighed. anyway,
-Chika is an OC, btw. I chose the name because I find it amusing that two girls who were paired with Yama-chan had roles as Chika. And in each roles, they co-starred with Mirai-chan. lol. (Nishiuchi Mariya as Moriyama Chika in Seigi no Mikata and Ishihara Satomi as Kamatsuda Chika in Bull Doctor)

Thanks for reading!
