Mirai’s heart beat raced.
She could feel the stare.
He's here.
She wanted to run but she knew that wouldn’t do.
She needed to stay calm.
She needed to pretend not to notice.
Unconsciously, her pace quickened.
And it seems he quickened his as well.
She could now hear his steps.
But no, she mustn’t run; even though it scares her.
He scares her.
…because if she run, he’ll come after her.
And she knew he’ll enjoy the chase.
So no… she must not run.

“Yamanaka-sensei is so lucky!!!!” Saaya gushed.
Mirai laughed.
“We know already, Saaya. You’ve been telling us that for half a day now!” Suzuka said good-naturedly. It was their break and they were in the hallways on their way back to their classroom.
“But she really is!!! I didn’t even know she and Sakaguchi-sensei were going out! She’s so lucky!!!” She continued.
Saaya had been crushing on Sakaguchi-sensei, their Chemistry teacher since first year but now rumor has it that he already proposed to Yamanaka-sensei, their Literature teacher.
“Too bad, Saaya-chan. Yamanaka-sensei beat you to it.” Umika teased.
Saaya pouted.
All of the girls laughed.
“I don’t think you really have to worry about that. You’re so popular. Half the boys of our year have or had a crush on you.” Mirai said.
“But I’m not interested in them…” Saaya pouted more.
Mirai looked to her left. For a moment she thought she saw someone.
‘Must have been my imagination...’
Mirai’s phone rang then. She took it out and saw that she had a new mail.
“I don’t know this number.” She commented and then clicked on the message.
“Shida-kun!”
Mirai looked back to see their Biology teacher, Kirihara-sensei.
“Sensei.”
“Shida-kun,” he said, holding up a flash disk. “Your class hand outs are here. Can I leave it to you? Be sure all of your classmates have a copy.”
He didn’t wait for Mirai to response and left once Mirai took the disk.
“Thank you…” Suzuka said sarcastically.
Mirai just smiled. “Just let it go, Suzu-chan.”
“Why is he always ordering you around?” Suzuka said disgusted. “You’re not his secretary, jeez.”
“Yeah, what’s with him? He always keeps you even after class. Even Chie-san is annoyed with him.” Umika added.
Mirai just shook her head. She didn’t really mind helping their sensei. It was just menial jobs. But her friends always complain about it.
“Ah, speaking of Chie-san. Do you remember Takano-san? Her boyfriend?” Mirai said, trying to change the subject. “He proposed to her as well! I think the wedding would be around the middle of the year.”
“Really?!?! That’s so romantic!! Oh, why is everyone lovey-dovey?!” Saaya said now continuing her rant about Yamanaka-sensei and Sakaguchi-sensei.
Mirai looked at her phone.
‘It’s so cold, can I hold you?’
It was a weird message. And it was from an unknown number.
Mirai shrugged.
‘Maybe it was just a mistake...’
----
“So many things changed here!” Mariya gasped.
Mariya visited Mirai for the first time this year and as they usually do, they went for a stroll outside.
It was a routine for them. They would just walk and walk while chatting not really thinking of where they would go.
“That’s because it’s been ages since you last visited me!” Mirai said, half-sulking, half-joking.
“Sorry. You know how it is.” Mariya said.
“I know. You’ve been busy…” Mirai said.
“I’ve been busy?? Shida Mirai, you’re talking about other people being busy? I think I would have visited before if you were home.” Mariya said laughing.
“Okay, we’ve both been busy.” Mirai gave in, laughing as well.
“What was his name?” Mariya said pointing at one of the houses. “Mirai-chan’s first crush...”
Mirai shook her head in amusement. “Ren-kun... Mou, you’re gonna tease me abou-“
“He really does look a lot like Yama-chan! Only taller and a bit skinnier... Poor Yama-chan. He’s only a substitute…” Mariya teased.
“Baka…” Mirai said expectantly.
Mariya smiled at Mirai. “No, because Mirai-chan’s dating Yama-chan cause she loves him, ne? Simple as that.”
Mirai blushed but nevertheless nodded.
A gate opened and a boy around their age went out. But then he saw them and made his way back.
But before he could disappear inside his house, Mirai called him.
“Kai-kun!”
He looked back and smiled shyly.
“I haven’t seen you for ages! How have you been?”
“I’m fine… How about you?” He said in a soft voice.
“Just so-so.” Mirai said, “Oh, by the way, this Nishiuchi Mariya.” Mirai introduced.
Mariya bowed at the boy and the boy returned it tentatively.
“Mariya, this is Ogawa Kai, he’s a friend.”
“Hey there.” Mariya greeted. Kai just bowed back.
“Mirai-chan,” he called. “I’ll go now. It was nice talking to you again.”
Mirai nodded. “Sure. Good to see you again. I missed you guys.”
Kai smiled at Mirai and then went back inside their home.
“Another boy?” Mariya said in a teasing voice.
“He’s just a childhood friend!” Mirai said, laughing a bit. Mariya loves to tease.
“We used to be very close. I always played with him and Ren-kun and the others. But now I rarely see them. It’s really nostalgic seeing him.”
“He was so shy towards you. Maybe he has a crush on you…” Mariya again, teased.
“Mariya!” Mirai complained.
Mirai’s phone suddenly rang.
She took it out and saw that she had a new mail. She opened it and found the same number that had mailed her the other day.
“Another mail from that number...” Mirai commented.
Mariya looked at Mirai’s phone. “What number?”
“The other day an unknown number mailed me. I thought it was just sent wrong but then here’s another one.” Mirai said; her brows scrunched up.
‘It’s so cold, can I hold you?’
“And it’s the same message. What do you think?” Mirai said showing Mariya the mail.
“Kinda creepy if you ask me. But I think it’s just one of those pranks where people make up numbers and send it random mails. Just ignore it. Maybe it’ll stop.” Mariya said.
Mirai just nodded.
---
“I’ll be there in a jiffy.” Mirai said hurrying to finish her task. “I’m really sorry Suzu-chan. You shouldn’t have waited for me. I kept you so late.”
“It's okay, Mirai-chan.” Suzuka said. “Besides, I wouldn’t really feel right if I leave you here in school alone at this hour. And your boyfriend is unexpectedly busy.” Suzuka said sarcastically.
Mirai just smiled while stapling the last of the papers.
“That Kirihara-sensei is really too much. He should be the one doing these, not you.” Suzuka said.
“I’m almost done.” Mirai said.
But then Mirai’s phone rang.
“This number again.” Mirai said a little impatiently.
“The ‘hold-me’ whoever it is?”
Mirai nodded. She opened the mail and her eyes widen.
“What is it?” Suzuka said worriedly.
Mirai wasn’t really showing anything to indicate something was wrong but Suzuka knew Mirai well enough to know when she is troubled.
And Suzuka knew right then that Mirai was distraught.
“T-they know me…. They know who I am…” Mirai said looking at her phone.
Suzuka took her phone.
‘Shida, it’s so cold… Let me hold you… Come on Mirai-chan…’
---
Mirai shook her head.
For a moment she thought she heard footsteps.
Was someone following her?
She was on her way to school; alone, unfortunately.
But the school was just around the corner.
She quickened her strides. She knew she must just be paranoid.
They-whoever they were- kept mailing her with creepy messages.
It was really scary because whoever it was knew everything about her. Where she lives, where she rides the train from and to, where she is at what time and what she is doing.
She had bought a new phone, a new number but then again he mailed her just two days after that.
‘You can’t escape me Shida-chan.’
She was really scared.
She had a stalker.
Finally she saw the gates. She couldn’t believe how relieved she was to saw their guard.
She entered the school and sigh in relief. Now she could relax a bit.
She went through the girls’ route towards their building.
Now that she thought about it, she was very early today.
It seems like no one was at school yet.
Mirai entered their building and made her way to their classroom. It was on the third floor.
No one really is around.
The school was a bit creepy, eerily silent like that.
And then she heard it.
Footsteps.
Footsteps towards her.
Now she could feel someone approaching her.
She knew whoever it was, was immediately at her back now.
“Mirai-chan.”
Mirai let out a squeak.
“Are you okay?”
It was Yuto. Mirai sighed. It was just Yuto.
Mirai nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine. Sorry.”
Yuto looked at her worriedly.
Mirai’s phone rang and she gave another squeak.
She took out her phone and inwardly groaned when she saw it was that number.
“Are you really okay, Mirai-chan?” Yuto asked. He noticed Mirai’s hand was shaking.
She didn’t answer him.
“What is it?” Yuto urged.
“I-it’s… s-stalker…” Mirai managed.
Yuto took her phone and opened the new mail.
‘Aren’t you cold, Shida-chan? I can come by anytime… Let me hold you…’
Yuto glared at the mail and took out his own phone.
“What are you doing?” Mirai asked, afraid.
Yuto dialed a number and Mirai realized he was calling her stalker.
“Yuto, no!”
Some already answered. “Who the hell are you?!” Yuto shouted through his phone.
Mirai couldn’t hear the other side but she was thankful. She didn’t want to hear his voice.
“Yes, I’m Nakajima Yuto!” Yuto shouted.
Mirai gasped. He knew Yuto, too?
“What do you want from Mirai you scumbag?! Quit bothering her!” Yuto continued.
“I’m her boyfriend, you jerk!” Yuto said.
Now Mirai could hear the other side as well but it wasn’t clear. It seems he’s shouting as well.
“Yuto, stop!” Mirai said trying to get the phone.
“Who the hell are you to order me around?!” Yuto shouted to his phone, ignoring Mirai.
“If I saw you with Shida-chan, I’ll kill you!” Mirai heard. She snatched Yuto’s phone away and hanged up.
And then she broke down.
What was happening? Now even Yuto is involved.
“Mirai-chan…” Yuto said kneeling in front of her.
“Mirai-chan!”
It was Suzuka, she ran up to them. “What happened?” She demanded to Yuto.
“Her stalker…” Yuto said, flaring up a bit.
“Suzu-chan... Yuto pretended to be my boyfriend and h-he said if he saw Yuto with me, he-he’ll k-kill him… I-I don’t know what to do anymore…”
---
“Is here okay?” Ryosuke asked.
“Yes, it’s more than enough.” Mirai said, giggling a little. After the little fiasco, Ryosuke along with all her other friends have been very protective of her. They make sure that someone comes with her to and fro the school or her HQ. Today, Ryosuke sent her to her HQ.
“Thank you.” Mirai said.
Ryosuke smiled at her. “Anything for you.”
“Go on, now or you’ll be late for your work.” Mirai said.
“Don’t worry about that. I’ll stay 'til you’re inside your HQ.” Ryosuke said. They were in a corner by Ken-On building. It wouldn’t do if their relationship were let out.
“I’m fine here…” Mirai said.
“I’ll stay here.” Ryosuke said with finality.
Mirai just sighed in surrender and nodded.
“Thanks again.” She said.
Ryosuke kissed her and then he smiled at her. “Now go.”
Mirai nodded and made her way to their building.
Truthfully Mirai was very thankful to know that Ryosuke were there. She was very afraid to be left alone now. But she didn’t want to worry her friends too much so she doesn’t share these fears.
Finally, she was inside the building. She looked back to see Ryosuke waved. She waved back and Ryosuke went on his way.
She felt a chill. She looked around. It was as if someone was looking at her.
She shook her head.
“Mirai-chan.” Mirai looked upward where the voice was coming from.
It was Mokomichi-kun from the second floor.
He gestured for her to come up and she obliged.
They entered a room and Mokomichi closed the door behind him.
“Mirai-chan,” He started. “About what you asked...”
Mirai looked up.
“I had my friend call the number. I don’t know how he did it but it seems your stalker is someone close to you. He knew far too many things. And… my friend told me he talked about you… bragged about you. Lies, of course, everyone who knew you would know that at once. But he told him stories… rude things about you.”
“What did he say?” Mirai asked.
“Rude things… he said he’d already used you… slept with you… He’s mental, I think.” Mokomichi said.
Mirai shook. This was freaking her out.
“Have you told Chie-san about this?” Mokomichi asked.
Mirai shook her head.
“Why don’t you tell her? This is serious…” Mokomichi said worriedly.
“I… I just thought I didn’t want to disturb her… She’s busy with the wedding and everything… My friends know, though.” Mirai said.
“How about your parents?” Mokomichi asked.
“I haven’t told them… I don’t know how they’ll react. Dad might go overboard.”
“Tell them.” Mokomichi urged. “They deserved to know. Chie-san as well.”
Mirai just looked to the floor.
“Mi-chan,” Mokomichi said using his nickname for her “You’re not alone in this okay? Let us help you. We won’t let anything happen to you.”
Mirai nodded, tears threatening to fall.
Mokomichi scratched his head. He wasn’t good with this.
“Well, I thought I’d just let you know…” he said awkwardly.
He was surprised when Mirai hugged him. He smiled to the hug. Mirai act very mature, but really, she was just a little girl.
Mokomichi glared at the thought of the stalker. How dare he threat his little sister?!
---
"This Sunday? Yeah, sure." Mirai said, beaming.
"Okay, I'll tell Yuma." Ryosuke said smiling. He was happy to see Mirai was back to her usual cheery self.
Mirai had told her parents and her manager about the stalker and Ryosuke didn't really know what they did but now the stalker stopped mailing Mirai.
Yuma's birthday was coming and they were having a party. Yuma had known about Mirai's situation and had told Ryosuke to invite Mirai to take her mind off of things. Ryosuke was glad about the invitation and was thrilled to hear that Mirai was really going.
Along with Mirai, Yuma also invited their other friends so Ryosuke knew it would be great.
---
Sunday came and together Mirai and Ryosuke made their way to Yuma’s hotel room.
When they arrived, everyone else was already there.
Frankly, it was just a little gathering with Yuma’s friends plus some food and some karaoke.
It was so much fun; a day where all of them could just be silly and have fun.
After singing a birthday song for Yuma and after eating, they’d have an icing fight. Chinen actually took half of the cake and splattered it onto Yuma’s face. Yuto, having missed this, hanged his video camera around his neck as to record each and every remaining second of the party.
And as if someone pushed the fast forward button, it was already time to go home. Well, for Mirai at least. Since the stalker business, she’d been afraid to go home very late.
It was only 6PM when she told Ryosuke she’d be going home.
Ryosuke smiled and nodded, “Okay, let me just say goodbye to Yuma then we can go.”
“Don’t be silly, Ryosuke. You should stay. It’s your friend’s birthday. It’s only 6PM and the train station’s just walking distance. Dad would be waiting for me at the other end.” Mirai said.
“Mirai, it’s dangerous.” Ryosuke said.
“He already stopped.” Mirai shrugged. “Stay.”
Hesitantly, Ryosuke nodded.
Mirai said goodbye to Yuma and then she went on her way.
---
Mirai went out the hotel and shivered. It was cold that day.
She hugged her jacket to herself more closely.
She looked forward and saw the train station straight up. It was really just a five-minute walk to the station.
Mirai looked at her back sharply.
She had heard something.
But there was nothing.
There was no one in that street. A shiver ran down Mirai’s back, and it had nothing to do with the cold.
She walked a little faster. She should have let Ryosuke come with her.
She was still near the hotel. She could go back. But she was afraid that someone might be waiting for her.
She took her phone out to call him.
She dropped her phone. There were 47 new mails all from that number again.
Now Mirai was sure she was being followed.
She started running. And then she heard his footsteps. He was running after her.
Mirai clutched at her heart.
He laughed. His laughter sent shiver to Mirai. It was a maniacal laugh.
Mirai turn to a corner and stopped abruptly.
It was a dead end. She was about to go back but he was already there.
He was blocking her way. He was approaching her slowly, laughing his creepy laughter. Mirai was backing away.
He was tall, wearing all black and a face mask.
Mirai felt numb. She didn’t know what to do, she couldn’t think.
He stopped.
Mirai took another step backward only to feel the wall on her back. She was trapped.
He grinned. And then he dashed for her.
Mirai screamed and closed her eyes.
“You bastard!”
Mirai opened her eyes and saw Ryosuke punched the guy.
The guy was taken by surprise but then it seems he took hold of the situation. He took something from his pocket and then jumped at Ryosuke.
With a jolt, Mirai realized it was a knife.
“Ryosuke! No!!!”
Red… it was as if all Mirai could see was red.
The guy had dropped the knife, stunned at what he did.
“Ryosuke! Ryosuke!” Mirai called but Ryosuke wasn’t moving.
Looking at Ryosuke like that had brought memories to Mirai. How she wish someone would say ‘cut’ and Ryosuke would stand up laughing. Just like all those years in TGQ.
Mirai looked for Ryosuke’s phone and dialed the first number she saw.
Yuto answered, “Ryosuke?”
“Y-Yuto.. Ryosuke… he’s-he’s bleeding… please come.”
Yuto didn’t respond but just a while later Mirai could already hear footsteps coming towards them.
The guy, seeming to wake up from a trance stood up and ran away. Just as he ran, the others arrived.
“Yama-chan!!!”
Yuto, Chinen, Okamoto-kun, Morimoto-kun, Yuma, Umika, Kento, Suzuka, Juri… Mirai’s brain could barely process what was happening.
“H-hospital…”
“That bastard!” Yuto shouted and then he, along with Kento, Morimoto-kun and Okamoto-kun ran after the guy.
“Nooo!!!!” Mirai shouted.
“Those idiots!” Chinen exclaimed, him and Umika approaching Mirai and Ryosuke.
“Chii! Yuto-“ Mirai said in a state of panic.
“I know Mirai-chan…” Chinen said kindly, “But I’m sure they’ll be okay. We need to get Ryosuke to the hospital first.”
Chinen put Ryosuke arms around his shoulder and lifted him up.
“The cab is here!” Juri said as he went to Ryosuke's other side to help Chinen.
Chinen, Mirai and Umika got on the cab while Suzuka said she’ll wait for the boys.
Mirai was about to say something but Yuma said, “Don’t worry. We’ll wait in the hotel.”
Mirai just nodded.
They arrived at the nearest hospital fast enough. They rushed Ryosuke to the emergency room but before they entered, Chinen stopped Mirai.
“Mirai-chan, please just wait by the lobby. There’s media here. I don’t know what happened but…”
“B-but-“
“I’ll go back to you as soon as I can.” Chinen promised and with Ryosuke on his back, he entered the emergency room.
Surely, the media had immediately recognized them and bombarded Chinen with question once the nurses had took Ryosuke.
Chinen, thinking fast, told them that a drunkard attack Ryosuke from coming back from a party. They seemed to buy it, fortunately.
He went to the lobby once he was let off.
He found Mirai there, staring at the ER door.
Really, that stalker had gone too far.
Chinen took the seat beside Mirai.
“Where’s Umika?” He asked.
“She called Suzu-chan…” She answered robotically.
Chinen just nodded.
Mirai placed her palm on her forehead. Chinen thought she must be near to breaking point. He sighed.
He placed an arm around Mirai’s shoulder and patted her, urging her to lean her head on his shoulder.
And as if it was the cue, Mirai started crying.
Chinen saw Umika approach them.
He smiled sadly at Umika. Umika returned it.
----
After many hours, or maybe it was just fifteen minutes, Yuto and the others arrived at the hospital.
Yuto’s brows were scrunched up.
“How is he?” He asked Chinen.
“We just arrived. We haven’t heard anything yet.” Chinen said. “What happened to you?”
“We didn’t catch him.” Yuto said, glaring. “Ryuu and Keito managed to remove his mask, though. But I don’t think I’ve seen him before.”
“What does he looks like?” Umika asked.
“Chinky eyes, big mouth, pointed nose…” Kento said. “It was kinda blurry. Everything happened so fast.”
“Wait, Yuto! You’re camera!” Juri exclaimed.
Realization dawned on Yuto and he snatched his camera from his neck.
He pressed replay and paused it on the guy’s face.
The other’s looked at him.
“I haven’t seen him before.” Suzuka commented. Everyone else said the same.
Yuto showed Mirai the video.
She gasped. “B-but that’s-“
---
“Come in…” Ryosuke called.
A girl with long black hair peeped through the white door.
Ryosuke smiled. “Neechan.”
She smiled at him. “How’s my little brother? How’s the arm?”
“A bit peaky, but I’m fine. I want to go out the hospital soon… Come in, what are you doing by the door?”
She beamed at him. “I brought something for you!”
Ryosuke perked up.
Her sister came in and pulled along her, Mirai-chan.
Ryosuke laughed.
“I’ve finished with the delivery, so I’ll leave you two now, okay?”
“Yeah, thanks.” Ryosuke said laughing at his sister’s antics.
Ryosuke looked at Mirai and smiled.
“How are you?” Mirai asked.
“How are YOU?” Ryosuke asked back.
Mirai’s brow went up curiously, “I’m fine but why-“
Ryosuke smiled, “Then I’m great.”
Mirai smiled at him.
Ryosuke patted the space beside him. “C’mere.”
Mirai obliged.
“Mirai,” Ryosuke said as Mirai sat down. “I have a confession to make.”
“What is it?”
“Actually…” Ryosuke said hesitantly, seriously… “Actually, I… I’m the grandson of Pluto’s leader.”
Mirai blinked.
Ryosuke continued to stare at her seriously.
Mirai blinked more.
And then she laughed.
“What the hell, Ryosuke?”
Ryosuke, laughed as well. “There.” He said, touching Mirai’s cheek. “Always smile, okay?”
Mirai smiled and nodded. She placed her arms around him and whispered, “thank you… and I’m sorry.”
Ryosuke silently shook his head and returned the hug.
Both of them didn’t notice the glare pointed to them.
---
“There’s another rumor.” Chinen said to Ryosuke. “The agency had managed to hush up the rumor about you being hospitalized but now there’s another one. Someone took a picture of you and Mirai-chan hugging. In the picture Mirai-chan’s face can’t really be seen, but you’re easily recognizable.”
Ryosuke nodded looking at their picture.
“It’s okay.” He said. “I’ll just tell them it’s Neechan. Mirai was wearing Neechan’s jacket here.”
Chinen just nodded.
“Any news about the stalker?” Ryosuke asked.
Chinen shook his head.
Ryosuke sighed.
Chinen sighed as well… Mirai-chan made him promise.
“Chii?”
---
There it was again.
Mirai’s heart beat raced.
She could feel the stare.
He was here.
But she won’t run…
...Because if she runs, he’ll come after her.
She knew he’ll enjoy the chase.
So no… she must not run.
She was coming home from school. The first time in a long while to go home alone.
Ryosuke was still at the hospital.
Mirai marched up her courage.
Just a little bit. Just a little bit more and it’ll be over.
She turned to a corner.
Dead end.
She looked around. Surely he was there, blocking her way, trying to continue where he left off before. Of course he knew Ryosuke was hospitalized.
“Takano-san..” she called.
He laughed. “So you knew?”
He removed his mask. And surely, Chie-san’s fiancé’s face. “But what good would that do? You can’t escape me Shida-chan…”
So it was true. He just used Chie-san to get to her.
That was unforgivable.
He made to attack her but before he could move, the hidden policemen and seized him.
When he was finally detained, Mirai’s knees gave in.
“You idiotic girl!”
Mirai looked up to see Ryosuke, still in his hospital gown striding towards her, Chinen at his heels.
“What the hell, Mirai?! Don’t make me worry like that! Playing as bait?! Are you out of your mind?!” Ryosuke roared.
“Sorry…” Mirai said sheepishly; Chinen mouthing the same thing to her behind Ryosuke.
Ryosuke plopped down besides Mirai. “Jeez, you almost gave me a heart attack.”
“Sorry…” Mirai said yet again, “But Ryosuke, it’s over now.” She continued, smiling in relief.
Ryosuke returned the smile.
“Yeah… Thank God.” Ryosuke said hugging Mirai to him.
