…PERSONALITY;

Ophelia is a disturbed and unstable young woman. Although not particularly dangerous in a sense, she can occasionally have lethal effect on those around her if she loses control. Clinically diagnosed as insane, Ophelia is a reclusive former socialite girl with a cheery disposition and a tendency towards the eccentric.

Usually a cheery young woman, Ophelia forms connections far too easily. Prone to latching to one person or a group, Ophelia is drawn more to emotional bonds than anything else. She is known to adapt herself to be what someone else needs, in the way of support. Rowdy or quiet, Ophelia is a master of blending herself to match a persons emotional wants.

At the manifestation of her powers, Ophelia slowly became more erratic in her behaviour. As an Empath, it was mostly because of the foreign feelings she was picking up from those around her. As a result she lost herself to madness as the chaos of her emotions lingered in her mind, throwing her psyche into disarray.

Ophelia’s heart broke from all the pain, suffering and anger she was so susceptible to, in the end, she grew despondent and bitter. Attempting to block herself off from the emotions assaulting her so frequently. As a result she became a little bit twisted, slightly insane and always referred to herself in third person; something she alludes to being a mechanism of defence.

…HISTORY;

A single child in a fairly affluent area, Sarah Mayspring was the pride and joy of her parents when she was born. Doted on and loved dearly, the young, wide eyed girl was exceptionally outgoing, displaying prodigy like abilities in numerous areas of her sophisticated life. Classical music was a passion, and throughout her childhood she learned to play numerous instruments at the encouragement of her loving parents. Her favoured instrument was the violin.

With the money and ability, Sarah attended college at a young age, younger than most. With Literature and Music as her majors she was deemed 'odd' for most of her college life. In fact, it was mild eccentricities in her personality, simply standing out among those of a lower class due to her far more 'old fashioned' persuasion in life. While in college, Sarah took to the name Ophelia, upon identifying with the character of Shakespeare's Hamlet; from then onwards, she would no long respond to the name Sarah, and only Ophelia. When Ophelia met Julio Richter on the playing fields one afternoon, she could never have believed that her entire life was about to change.

Despite slight hesitation on her part, Ophelia quickly fell hopelessly in love with Julio, called Ric by his friends and herself. The pair had a whirlwind relationship which was solidified by the onset of Ophelia empathic powers. Unaware, both of them were linked by a bond Ophelia developed to the emotions Ric had, his love and happiness the ground work for Ophelia's stable and secure persona. This also drove Ophelia to maintain Ric's happy, calm, loved emotions. Keeping Ric stable kept Ophelia stable.

However, when Ric left college, and Ophelia, the bond between them snapped. Unaware as to why Ric left; as he forgot to leave the note he wrote, Ophelia worried herself sick about him, while still trying to find the same stability and love she had with Ric. In the end, after many failed attempts to reclaim that feeling, Ophelia was left to the onslaught of college emotions. As the surrounding echoes of feelings hit Ophelia, she slowly lost herself to the barrage of foreign feelings, fracturing her psyche in an attempt to save herself.

Fearing for their daughters sanity, Ophelia was placed in a mental institution. She was twenty three when her parents had her declared insane and she was left to the treatments of Fairweather Sanatorium. Two years worth of insanity around her built and built, ricocheting against Ophelia's already damaged mind. No method of treatment appeared to work; shock treatment, cat-scans, inclusion or seclusion. Ophelia remained the same as ever, it wasn't until Dr Right, a young doctor trained to recognise what others couldn't, informed the staff that Ophelia was not clinically ill, simply a mutant going untreated or trained with her abilities, that the treatment attempts stopped.

Her isolation from contact but not emotion led Ophelia to block herself off significantly, referring to herself in third person, talking to herself and in turn her only possession; her beloved violin, Miss Charlotte. The discovery that Ophelia was a mutant did not bring the return of her parents, and after two years of institutionalisation, no one believed that Ophelia would manage rightly on her own. As such she was released into the care of Dr Archie Right, the psychiatrist who declared her not insane, merely troubled.

Ophelia did not re-establish herself back into normal society as was hoped. Instead she furthered her distance from what was considered the norm; standing out in her chosen clothes, dying her hair, tattooing her face. While Dr Right encouraged her display of individuality and what he called progression, his own emotions were unwittingly affecting Ophelia. His drive to see her well, his pride and obsession with her health built within Ophelia the more she had contact with Dr Right and eventually, his obsession drove her away.

It was when she single handedly rendered a team of SHEILD operatives unresponsive with a burst of her empathic projecting that she was enlisted into the United States ‘secret’ projects. Although her sanity was clearly questionable, they pushed through her admission and assignments due to her specific gift. Able to function remotely having learned how to block most emotions from reaching her mind, Ophelia was taken off single person assignments and offered for a group.

Team X was to be her starting trial.

After several months within the team, the reunion with Rictor and making numerous friends, Ophelia's mental state seemed to be slightly more stable. It was then that the operatives controlling Ophelia's contract decided to utilise her powers in a more personal agenda. Pulling her from the Team-X program, Ophelia was sent to Britain, assigned with a mission of utmost importance. Alongside her was SHEILD's secret operative within the Team-X program, Mercy Dyer. Mercy suited the assignment due to her ability to transport both herself and Ophelia from one place to the next without detection.

However, as Ophelia's objective was revealed, the assassination of known SHEILD commander and operative Lady Viper, Mercy revealed herself a spy to Ophelia and persuaded her to fail in her task. The time spent with the woman forged a sort of emotional connection, another way for Ophelia to maintain some kind of stability in drawing from Mercy's own stability. Agreeing to keep Mercy's secret, fail in her mission and create a legitimate reason for it, Mercy and Ophelia staged an attack by the SHEILD operatives on Lady Viper's behalf, rendering Ophelia's assignment incomplete and over. Mercy disappeared with the SHEILD group, having planned to return to her own organisation, and Ophelia was to be sent back to the American headquarters for reassignment.

Due to her work and progress in Africa and Russia with the group known as Team-X, Ophelia was reassigned to Stryker's roster and given a plane ticket to Japan.

…ETC;

As an empath, Ophelia is greatly ruled by not only her emotions, but the emotions of those around her. As her power began to develop, Ophelia remained unaware and as such wasn't capable of controlling her slowly growing abilities. Because of this she formed a tight connection with another being, giving her an unconscious dependency on that person: Rictor.

When the connection was severed Ophelia's mental state was severely damaged.

Ophelia's empathic abilities are dangerously untrained. Her abilities allow her to manipulate those around her based on their emotions and to nudge them towards other emotional states. She is able to delve into the psyche of a person and find each emotional trigger, sometimes having a severe effect on the person; she has the capability to trigger memories attached to emotions if she forces herself deep enough into the foreign psyche.

Coupled with the ability to manipulate, Ophelia can also draw emotions into herself. She has the ability to 'stock pile' emotions to use or to simply stop another person from dealing with them. Most commonly this is done with negative feelings; despair, anger, pain, loss. Ophelia takes them into herself and as a side effect often has to experience them herself. If she doesn't unleash them through herself, they grow in number and power and Ophelia can unleash them upon a group or individual to cause psychological damage or to render an assailant or assailants unconscious due to emotional overload.

Following her own psychological snap, Ophelia has been unable to experience her own emotions.
