Plus, the comics they get just aren't all that funny. As you point out, the mass-market nature of the show requires that they get the blandest possible participants, rather than anyone who would actually be - horrors - shocking or even mildly thought-provoking. They also can't get anyone who's already well-known or established - again, the nature of the show demands that they get hungry up-and-comers. And the thing is, the material from those guys is, by definition, more untried and unpolished than material from more established veterans

Well, I may be an idealistic purist here but I think that the moment you introduce thoughts of "making it", you stop being an artist and everything you do is compromised.
I can't possible see myself as a Jerry Seinfeld-type comic and that independance is of great value to me.
I would likely be marked early in the Last Comic selection process and ushered out the door rather quickly.
