i never make curls myself but i searched a bit on the internet and this is what i found:

after washing your hair you should use L'oreal Hot Curls (its in a pink bottle) and then dry your hair. Then make the curls and use some hairspray.

(its from that advertisement with beyonce, well i live in holland so im not sure if its the same advertisemt there, i guess so)

reviews and stuff about loreal hot curls

also, I found that not brushing your hair after a shower makes for really nice looking curls. I have naturally curly hair, and the only way to keep them from frizzing up is to not brush after a shower.

my hair doesnt hold a curl either.... or at least it didnt until i started using setting lotion. the proper old fashioned stuff they used in the 50's the only one i can find locally is by wella but there may be a couple of others out there. i mix mine about 50/50 with water and spray each section lightly with it before curling. dont spray too much on as it has to dry before you can take the hair off the tongs otherwise you just get a soggy wave. once im done i spray the whole lot with hairspray aswell just to be on the safe side.
