favorite female writers/poets with themes of madness? I love Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Wurtzel, Emily Dickinson and Susanna Kaysen. As for non-writers, I like Fionia Apple and Marilyn Monroe. Most people don't seem to know about Marilyn Monroe's mental insatability. She actually had 2 suicide attempts (maybe three, if she did ( Read more... )

I really don't agree with your comments about Marilyn Monroe at all. I am a huge fan of Marilyn's and have been for about 20 years so I've read dozens of books about her and they all mention her own personal history of mental instability. I would argue that is one of the very things she is known for, as a tragic icon.

I guess to the fans who have looked into her history. But I believe that most of the general public know very if little if anything about her mental instability.

Again I totally disagree. A lot of the coverage of her in the media focuses on her mental instability and the fact that she supposedly committed suicide. You hardly need to have been a fan to have seen any of that.

hmmm.. maybe it is just the people I know.

Everyone I talk to believes President Kennedy had an affair with Marilyn, and then had her killed. The "conspiracy" theroy is much more popular with any non-monroe fan I have come in contact with. But, as I said before, it could just be the people I know.

People seem to like the conspiracy theroy when it comes to celebrity deaths. Suicide is just too...I guess hard to accept. Kurt Cobain was killed by Courtney Love, Marilyn by President Kennedy etc.

I was refraining from commenting because I didn't want to come across as nit-picky but as for fiona apple as a "non-writer", I think you should give her a little more credit. Unlike a lot of female singers these days she does actually write all of her own music and her songs are very much poetry being sung. I think it's funny, you're young so may not remember when she came out very well but I've followed her career and the media really has no clue what to think of her. I remember I saw her on Howard Stern not long after I found out who she was and she really gained my respect. She had this funny sarcastic attitude. He was trying to get her to kiss this girl (a fan of hers) and I seriously think she considered for a second and then said no and so Howard Stern was trying to make her out to be a prude or a homophobe. It was a long time ago so I can't exactly remember what was said but the idea was she had no problem kissing a girl she just wouldn't do it for him but she did give her a hug and they started chatting and completely excluded ( ... )

Yeah, she is a writer. My mistake.

That makes sense, drugs make some people act manic, while other people naturally suffer from manic episodes.
