Manics in the Port

Aug 22, 2008 00:14

ZOMG THE MANICS WERE AMAZING!!!!

They played Of Walking Abortion (introduced as "that party tune") and Umbrella and Pennyroyal Tea and James spun around on one foot and Nicky wore a ridiculously short skirt and knee socks and just GLEEE!!

I appreciate no one on my flist, with the exception of 0_clay_0 will care about this, but hey.

I haven't gotten into them yet, but I should. Apparently they were highly influenced by one of my favorite cult movies, ever, "Times Square".

I need to do something about that.

Glad you had a good time!

I think you would like them. I mean, I think lots of people would because they're pretty intelligent and witty and glamourous and you know, what's not to like?! Hah but I am biased.

Indeed, Nicky used to paint the eye mask thing on his face like the 'Nicky' character in Times Square (I think....) and there's another link...but I forget it right now. I've never seen the film though, so I could be talking tosh.

I can upload you something if you'd like?

I need to just spend some time listening to them, reading their lyrics. I'm sure I can find enough online to figure out if I they're right for me.

Did he? I know one of their songs "Roses in the Hospital" is inspired by the movie, although judging from the lyrics, really just that name. And I know they covered "Damn Dog". Apparently the movie meant something to them.

That movie changed my whole life.

Oh yeah indeed, I'd forgotten Damn Dog was from that film. Sometime when I have a bit of energy I'll find you a picture of Nicky with the eye mask. Don't think I have one on the Mac.

And I don't doubt the film meant something to them. They all grew up together in a small town in south Wales where there wasn't really anything to do. So thy used to all sit in James' house and read books, watch films, read plays, listen to music and discuss and debate it all, make their own world out of the best bits of all of it and with each other because they didn't feel they had anything else. So if something meant anything to them, it had to mean everything, because they lived in such an intense little world.

I really feel I should watch it now *goes to examine what amazon has to say about it*

Ahhh *hugs you* I wish I'd just listened to The Holy Bible for the first time. It was the last Manics album I got, when I was 16. (apart from the ones released after I was 16, erm, obviously). I have fond memories of trying to sing along to Ifwhiteamerica in my room :)

They're really very good live, when they are on form. And particularly in Wales. It was lovely coz for a change I was at the back so I could see the whole crowd on the floor jumping up and down and pointing and then there were lovely things like singing a whole verse of Design For Life by ourselves. *loves the Manics*

p.s. Richey's prettier than everyone, don't feel bad.

Hmm well a lot of people don't think much of TTMTTMY, but it was the first MSP album I ever got, after seeing them live when I was 13 (been obsessed a long time, hahah) so I have a soft spot for it ( ... )

Good luck re your Saturday tkt. I'm going for this afternoon / evening. Would have liked to go tomorrow as well, but I'm going to Get Loaded on Sunday, cos H wants to see Iggy again. Just got a new puppy & don't want to leave my OH to look after her every day.

I did (and he did). They were on form. Ended up in thge thick of things (as usual) and it was great fun.

Puppy is an 8 week old tri-coloured rough coated JR terrier bitch called Rosie. She is terrorising my somewhat aloof (very) male Saluki. Pulling his tail, chewing his lead (while he is wearing it) and using his water bowl as a paddling pool. He alternates between studiously ignoring her and growling when she goes too far in her attempts to get him to notice her.

Yay, I'm glad :D

I, er, collapsed and spent the day in bed/on the sofa.

Hahah thats amazing, she sounds like a little terror. Though also somewhat tiring, no doubt?

I am so glad you were able to go and see them and they were on fire! So you finally got to hear both Umbrella and Pennyroyal Tea live. Yay! Tis a really good setlist. I love James' acoustic version of The Everlasting and Faster is perhaps the best opening song of all times, so you were really lucky to get both. :-D

Haven't heard them play Of Walking Abortion in a way too long time. And those lesser known THB songs inspire Nicky to come up with his greatest sarcastic comments, lol. The Manics all have a fabulous sense of humor... One of my favorite song introductions of all times was when James said: "The next one's called The Intense Humming of Evil" and the whole crowd was suspiciously quiet all of a sudden until a few hardcore fans began to clap and shout and James laughed and continued: "Don't clap, you sad puppies, it's You stole the sun from my heart." Haha... gotta love James.

I think one of my favourite things Nicky ever said was at one of his solo gigs, introducing Mr Carbohydrate: "This one's for you sick fucks down the front..."

Aww, thanks Wire. Love you too.

You've gotta love how happy he is when people shout "why don't you just fuck off?" or "don't fall in love coz we hate you still" at him. He always grins and kicks a leg in the hair, normally showing off his knickers. Again, thanks Wire!

James is so funny though, I loved that comment! He's just got such a dry sense of humour. He once told us an ancedote about Sean stealing his keyboard and trying to make it like Kraftwerk...and he comes home and finds Sean with his keyboard all around him, in bits! Hehe.

I was ever so excited about Faster. And OWA because for years my username everywhere was loser_liar_fake_or_phoney. So I feel like it's my song really, heheh.
