Going Undercover
Jen straightened from where she had been leaning against the front of her desk, frowning. “Jethro, you do remember that I’m the director of this agency, right?”
Gibbs smirked at her. “Yeah, Jen, I remember. Offer still stands.”
“Offer?” she repeated. “It’s not an offer. It’s a mission. An undercover mission.”
“If you’re worried about being recognized, you will have a disguise, you know. And pretty much nobody has heard of NCIS.”
Jen snorted. “Yes, that makes me feel better. But, Jethro, this agency has lots of other agents. A few other female agents- even a few more redheads, if that’s what you’re looking for. I still don’t see why you need me specifically for this.”
Was it her imagination, or did Gibbs look uncomfortable all of a sudden? “Don’t need a redhead, Jen,” he said, more softly than before. “Have you been following the case?”
She blinked at the non sequitor, but said, “Only some. I’ve been buried under paperwork for the past day and a half.” Jen narrowed her eyes at him. “Why?”
It was not her imagination- Gibbs did look uncomfortable. “We’ve been chasing down Edmond’s known associates, and observing them. Our best bet will be to corner Edmond’s little brother, Ricky, but he’s managed to stay off our radar. The only place we know he’ll be in public is a class he’s taking down at the community center. A couples’ class.”
Jen leaned back against her desk. “A what?”
“A couples’ class,” Gibbs repeated.
The director ran her fingers through her hair. “Jethro… Can’t you send Tony and Ziva?”
“I learned my lesson last time, Jen,” he said. “Those two don’t need any help.”
“So, send McGee in with Ziva.” Gibbs just stared at her, and she conceded, “Okay, yeah, that’s a bad idea. And we really can’t send Abby into a potentially-dangerous situation.”
“Which leaves you, Jen,” said Gibbs.
She couldn’t argue with that, but she wasn’t ready to let him off the hook just yet. “So, this undercover assignment… we’d be participating in a couples’ class?”
“Well, yeah.”
“As in, a class designed to help two people become a better couple?”
“Well, yeah.”
“And the only female agent you can find is me, who’ll go undercover as a couple with- I presume- a male agent, but not DiNozzo or McGee. So, you?”
“Well… yeah.”
Jen grinned. “You want to start getting into character now?”
