I am now going to talk at you about music. With a meme.

List your 30 favorite bands/musicians (in no particular order) without looking at the questions, and then answer the questions using your list.

1. Franz Ferdinand
2. Belle & Sebastian
3. The Decemberists
4. The Magnetic Fields
5. Pink Floyd
6. The Beatles
7. The White Stripes
8. Dresden Dolls/ Amanda Palmer
9. Barenaked Ladies
10. Neutral Milk Hotel
11. Led Zeppelin
12. Joy Division/New Order
13. Death From Above 1979
14. Neil Young/ Crazy Horse, etc.
15. Neko Case / New Pornographers (yeah it's a stretch putting these in the same category, but I'm doing it anyway).
16. Queen
17. Rasputina
18. Talking Heads
19. U2 (mostly the first half of their career)
20. Ben Folds / Five
21. Iggy Pop/ The Stooges
22. Louis XIV
23. Gorillaz
24. Blur
25. Tori Amos
26. Dandy Warhols
27. The Doors
28. Gogol Bordello
29. Jonathan Coulton
30. Muse

1. How did you get into 29 (Jonathan Coulton)?
I believe Chas put him on the first mixtape he made me. The song was "Skullcrusher Mountain." And really, that's enough said right there. Between that, "Re: Your Brains" and "Still Alive," I was hooked.

2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22 (Louis XIV)?
"Finding Out True Love Is Blind," the year it was a radio hit. I was surprised and pleased to find that the rest of the album was just as good-- the only reason I wasn't hearing the rest of it on the radio was that it was a bit too dirty for these parts. But if you want clean fun, go fly a kite.

3. How many albums by 12 (Joy Division/New Order) do you own?
Hard to say because I downloaded a metric fuckton of New Order singles and remixes in search of a particular version of "The Perfect Kiss." I think I've got two full Joy Divison albums, Substance and Closer.

4. What is your favourite song by 5 (Pink Floyd)?
Ho man, that's a tough one. Um... I might have to say "Echoes."

5. What is your favorite song by 15 (Neko Case/The New Pornographers)?
Hm, maybe combining these two really was cheating a bit. Um. I'm gonna have to go with "Three or Four" by TNP, and either "Bowling Green" or "Andy" by Neko.

6. Is there a song by 6 (The Beatles) that makes you happy?
Yes, most of them. If I had to pick a particularly happy one, though, I'd go out on a limb and say "Good Morning Good Morning."

7. What is your favorite song by 10 (Neutral Milk Hotel)?
I'm going to go with "Holland 1945," the most upbeat song about Anne Frank ever written.

8. What is a good memory you have involving 30 (Muse)?
Anytime I have ever been barreling down the highway with Chas listening to "Knights of Cydonia," waiting for the buildup buildup buildup, and finally, upon reaching the appropriate moment, everyone within earshot headbanging on cue, as if we were reenacting Wayne's World. Only we're not, because that is genuinely the only action one can take while listening to that song. You could be in a coma and you'd still have to bang your head.

9. Is there a song by 19 (U2) that makes you happy?
"Trip Through Your Wires."

10. How many times have you seen 23 (Gorillaz) live?
Zero. And it's a damn shame, too.

11. What is the first song you ever heard by 26 (The Dandy Warhols)?
"Bohemian Like You." Which is plenty catchy, but then I discovered they had even more interesting songs.

12. What is your favourite album by 11 (Led Zeppelin)?
Oh jeez. Here's the thing: my dad had the box sets, not the actual albums. So I don't have much experience listening to them in album order. Looking at the tracklists of each, though, I'm gonna have to say I, with IV close behind.

13. Who is your favourite member of 1 (Franz Ferdinand)?
I love them all. I love them each in their own way. But Bob Hardy is the only one whom (in a fit of high-school passion) I've ever sworn I would marry someday, so I guess he gets the edge here.

14. Have you ever seen 14 (Neil Young) live?
No. I almost got to go with my dad to see CSNY several years ago, but my mom was nearly dead of pneumonia that day so we didn't go.

15. What is a good memory involving 27 (The Doors)?
Seeing a guy with a giant beard, sunglasses and a motorcycle driving down Washington Street in my town with a giant-as-all-fuck American flag flying off the back, blasting out of his speakers "The killer awoke before dawn... he put his boots on..."

16. What is your favourite song by 16 (Queen)?
"Don't Stop Me Now," probably.

17. What is your favourite album by 18 (Talking Heads)?
Stop Making Sense, because that totally counts. Also a brilliant film.

18. What is your favorite song by 21 (Iggy Pop/ The Stooges)?
"Neighborhood Threat." I looked it up because the lyrics were in Watchmen, and fell quite in love with it. I also prefer his version of "China Girl" over Bowie's.

19. What is the first song you ever heard by 25 (Tori Amos)?
I... I don't know! Maybe it was "Happy Phantom?" Or... no, it was "Silent All These Years," it had to have been, it was always on the radio when I was growing up.

20. What is your favourite album by 2 (Belle & Sebastian)?
Push Barman To Open Old Wounds, which is actually a big collection of all their EPs. I think it counts, but if you want to stick strictly to studio albums, I'll say The Life Pursuit.

21. What is your favourite song by 3 (The Decemberists)?
Oh hell, that's difficult. I'm going to say "Here I Dreamt I was an Architect," and note that it took me more than four tries to spell Dreamt correctly. *headdesk*

22. What is your favourite song by 8 (Dresden Dolls/ Amanda Palmer)?
I've taken quite a liking to "Leeds United." "Ampersand" and "The Jeep Song" are also way up there.

23. How many times have you seen 17 (Rasputina) live?
None. Have you spotted a trend yet? I'm lame and don't get out much.

24. What is the worst song by 12 (Joy Division/New Order)?
There are far too many needless New Order remixes. And somehow I own them all, thanks to the generosity of the internet.

25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28 (Gogol Bordello)?
"When The Trickster Starts A-Poking (Bordello Kind Of Guy)."

26. What is your favourite album by 7 (The White Stripes)?
Elephant.

Well that was interesting, but there were a lot of repeat questions and it didn't even have enough questions for all the artists. I betcha I could make up one of these that is even more interesting to do. Stay tuned, readers.
