Right place, Right time

Question for the few people reading this. Have you ever read a book or seen a movie (or heard a song, or anything else, for that matter) at the exact right moment in your life, so that it has a peculiarly powerful impact on you? You know the feeling - you're nodding compulsively, or staring wide-eyed and open-mouthed at the screen, or sobbing, or ( Read more... )

Fourish times I can think of off the top of my head: cliche as it is, Damien Rice's The Blower's Daughter - annoying but cathartic total and utter mental breakdown. [I can now listen to this song tear-free just fine.] Another one (kindamaybe - less of a right place/right time and more of a general fierce impact) would be April 8th, by NMH which I still cannot listen to on loop because it throws my entire mood out of wack; it's one of the most heart-wrenching songs ever. Someday You Will Be Loved (DCFC) because I can identify so well with it at this moment in time (it doesn't "change" me so-to-speak, but it definitely has an impact every time I listen to it). Lastly (and mildly lamely) would have to be Chapter and Verse by Laura Smith. Out of all the stories and all the books I've ever read, this just hit me *so* hard - exactly like you said, where you're just staring wide-eyed with your hand over your mouth and tears streaming down your face. Yes on all - would love links/songs (my knowledge of music from the last 5 years or so is pretty embarrassing.. to the point that I'm not even sure if those songs you listed are from the last five years. Although it might be an "I know it when I hear it" sort of thing. :)

Here you are - all of them are kind of... I don't want to say obscure, but maybe that's the right word, and a little strange -- the actual singing isn't amazing, but the words for all three are just beautiful.

The Blower's Daughter by Damien Rice (from the album "O" and the film Closer; lyrics)

April 8th by Neutral Milk Hotel (from the album On Avery Island; very much an acquired taste; lyrics)

Someday You Will Be Loved by Death Cab For Cutie (from the album Plans; lyrics)

Chapter and Verse by Laura Smith (I've talked to several people about this story and all of them liked it, but none of them seemed to be as affected by it as I am/was - I guess it's just one of those things. As much as you can help it, don't read ahead - I doubt it would lessen the blows this story renders, but still.)
