Further Oppression of Our Youth

I was other at Anime News Network just now for...aw hell, I forget, and I saw some article on how in Arkansas there's a law or something that restricts access by minors to more "mature" reading material, and apparently it initially meant just softcore bookstore pornography and the like, well, it looks like at some point or other that this has been ( Read more... )

It aggravates me to no end how protective parents are getting. I mean, within reason it's acceptable, but like, a person I used to know that shall remain nameless(and heartless until the end of time, but that's another post) seemed to be constantly shielded by their parents, getting scared and curling up into a fetal position when something even remotely uncomfortable, not even painful would come up in conversation, and would get scared during movies really easily. This same person is also against the concept of war or violence of any kind for the most part. It's an admirable idealism, but it's hard for me to live in this world knowing what's going on outside the safety of my paradigm to not believe that there are bad things out there. You hear every so often that videogames and movies are training our children to kill. I know I'm not a parent yet, but you know, I think I'd rather have children that had good reflexes and wouldn't crack under pressure than ones that would just freeze if something bad ever happened. God only knows how ( ... )

The parents getting protective isn't the part that bothers me, it's that they expect their children to be as shletered as they want, but they think it's the government's job to do it, and to shelter every other kid too. (Honestly, if I think it's bad for my kid, it must be bad for every kid! Their parents are horrible for letting them see that!)

Anyway... exactly how does pornography screw up someone who is "young enough"? Define "young enough" first, of course. :) I don't agree that it can ever "screw up" someone, I just think it causes them to mature faster (been there, seen it, done that type.) Older generations don't like seeing younger generations maturing faster than them.

Per my child psych readings, apparently being exposed to sex at too young an age frequently enough may cause damage, and if I recall correctly, symptoms of sexual abuse and there's a greater likelyhood for social problems and the like in the child(I'm talking about 6 year olds here) who believe that knowing that much is normal...that and once word gets out(and it will as teachers/parents often don't understand the meaning of the word "sacred"), the kid'll probably scorned because of it. Wish I could find that text or set of notes or I'd put it up here...
