work in progress...

“Hey! Scarlett O’Hara!”

Brenda shielded her eyes from the bright Los Angeles sun. Other students milled around her as she searched for the person with the death wish. Her eyes landed on Sharon, leaning against her cherry red mustang, and a smile spread across her face.

Sharon stood up straight as Brenda got a tighter grip on her backpack and jogged to the brunette. Brenda collided with Sharon, wrapping her arms tightly around her. Sharon gave her a squeeze and they separated.

“What are you doing here?”

“Wow. Talk about mixed signals.” Sharon teased. “College gets out earlier than high school.”

“So, you’re home for the summer?”

“That’s the plan.” Sharon smiled, “You look fantastic.”

“You’ve lost your California tan.”

“Yeah, that’ll happen in Boston.” Sharon nodded.

“Bye Brenda!”

Sharon and Brenda turned to the voice. “Bye Mikki.” Brenda murmured.

“Who’s that?” Sharon asked once the girl was out of sight.

Brenda sighed. “Mikki Mendoza. She joined debate. She’s got a crush on me or something and won’t leave me alone.”

“And you’re not interested? She’s pretty.”

“She’s a freshman.” Brenda clarified and Sharon nodded knowingly. “I’m not looking to be the next Louie Provenza.”

“Are you seeing anyone age appropriate?”

“Why?” Brenda grinned. “Are you?”

“Currently, no.” Sharon answered,

“So…” Brenda draped her arms over Sharon’s shoulders and leaned in until their lips were only millimeters apart. “Can I do this…?”

Sharon slid an arm around Brenda’s waist, pulled her tightly against her and closed the remaining distance.

Sharon walked into the kitchen and skidded to a halt. “Mom… I thought you had a meeting tonight.”

“It got rescheduled for tomorrow.” Laura explained, looking up from the book she was reading. “What are you up to?”

“I ran into Brenda and I was going to grab us a snack. Do we have any cookies?”

“I think there are some Thin Mints in the freezer.”

Sharon grinned. “That’s the way to Brenda’s heart.” She opened the freezer, pushing frozen foods out of the way in her quest for the confection.

“So, you’re here for less than twenty four hours and you’re already with Brenda.” Laura said suggestively.

“Yes, because, as you’ve kindly pointed out to me many times before, I don’t have any other friends.” Sharon laughed.

“I never said it like that. You make me sound terrible.” Laura laughed. “I merely said that you purposefully create distance between yourself and other people. Consequently, you don’t have many people who you consider friends not that people don’t like you.”

“Just keep digging, mom.” Sharon teased as she pulled out the girl scout cookies.

“Leave your door open.”

“Are you serious?” Sharon narrowed her eyes incredulously. “What am I going to do, get her pregnant?”

Laura waved her off. “Fine, fine, I don’t want details!”

Sharon jogged up the stairs, rounded the corner and entered her bedroom. She tossed the box of thin mints at Brenda who caught it with a grin. Sharon closed the door and laid on her bed and held her hand out for a cookie.

Brenda opened the sleeve and handed Sharon a cookie and crunched into one of her own.

“My mom’s home.”

“I thought you said she had meetings all afternoon.”

“Rescheduled.” Sharon shrugged a little, running her hand up Brenda’s back underneath her shirt.

Brenda stole a kiss. “Should we be up here then…?”

“We’re adults.” Sharon pulled Brenda in for another kiss. “Plus, it wouldn’t be the first time we fooled around in my room when my mom and Bill were home…”

“That’s true,” Brenda flipped them and pinned Sharon to the bed. “But we’re usually a lot more covert about it.”
