I've never understood that sentiment either... Every single person I've dated, save one, has been a very good, usually longtime and/or close friend before we started dating.
I think perhaps the sentiment is based on a fear of losing said friend if the relationship doesn't work out, and that leaves many people unwilling to try dating friends they value/don't want to lose.
That's what I would think -- the not losing a friend thing.
Or maybe they just know their friends well enough to know there is something about him/her they really could not deal with in that sort of relationship...
Well yes but that should not rule out all friends. Individuals yes there are always individuals it would be a bad Idea to date. (those happen to be the ones I end up going out with most of the time)
I don't now -- it could very easily. Maybe all friends have some trait that an individual cannot stand. Maybe there's something that does differentiate between platonic and romantic relationships, and people can be friends with one, but not romantic.
