Life's cusps

I was just watching a romantic comedy* (like I do), and it finally dawned on me what my faint irritation is at most of these films. There comes a scene where the protagonist finally has a chance for happily ever after. I don't like most rom-coms because in most of them the hero engages in at least one act to get the attention of the object of his/her affections that would net him/her a restraining order if he/she tried it in real life.

Heh... The difference between a crime and a demonstration of true love is whether or not the girl wants you to do it. (But she won't tell you which it is in advance.)

I've gotten to the point where I occasionally recognize these cusps when they're happening. "Everything hinges on what you do at this moment", I'll realize. Unfortunately, that realization doesn't come with instructions as to what to do. Many times, it's far from obvious what would be the best thing to do. And I'll choose wrong.

Maybe. But how do you know you chose wrong? Last I checked, Life doesn't hand out an answer key to last week's quiz...

Amen!

I've often had similar wishes myself.

But speaking of wishes, sometimes happy endings (romantic, sci-fi, etc) are the wish fulfillment that can be the salve to take the edge off of the pain. "SOMEbody got it right, for a change." I used to use Heinlein that way.
