Yes, that's 'Part 1', not the latest/last HP movie. I move slowly ( Read more... )

Ha! I knew you'd have great things to say about that movie! I do like your analysis of THE DANCE, and in spite of my lack of fangurl chills for it, I still have to thank the movie producers/writers/directors for putting that in there. It really does solidify the whole idea that they *should've* and *could've* but just didn't. None of the movies still explain why Hermione would ever choose Ron, and I would've thought that Ball of Light speech might have made the real Hermione puke with laughter, or cringe with disbelief, but whatever. I'll take RHr to HG any day, to be honest. HG is well and truly the bane of my HP existence ( ... )

Heh, thanks!

I still have to thank the movie producers/writers/directors for putting that in there. ... I think THE DANCE might have gotten up there under protest from Jo, but since all the movie folks wanted it up there, she had no choice on the matter. The movie folk - Yates and Heyman - certainly have pushed THE DANCE scene. I've seen them several times, in video or print interviews following the release of Part 1, actively coming out and supporting it. Yates said it was his favourite scene, I think. Oh, and Heyman did in the UK premiere, didn't he? He mentions THE DANCE, there's apparently an audience reaction, which he addresses, something like "... although some people didn't"? I forget his words, but I do know even just 4 days ago at 1am in the morning my time the top movie folk were pushing THE DANCE ( ... )

I just had to write about THE DANCE, I'd heard so much about it back when the movie was released. Like I wrote in the post, I can really get where you and others were coming from back then, all of those 'Harry and Hermione in the tent' stories examining "Hermione's Choice".

Potter movies are like one really big fix-it fic in many aspects.

They really are. It's brilliant how they supply such huge vindication/confirmation to many of the DH or other errors we've been talking about for years. For example, something I forgot to write in my review, they totally threw away the whole brand-new-to-save-book-7 'wand lore' foolishness that Rowling desperately shoehorned into the book. In fact, they spat in her face - Ron gives Harry the Snatcher's wand, Harry tries a test spell, it works famously. Hee. Take that, Rowling! Embarrassing.

... so imagine my surprise when I found out I was shipping wrong!

Oh, please, put the 'wrong' in quotation marks! H/Hr is not 'canon' but that doesn't make it 'wrong'. :-)

honestly if it wasn't going ( ... )

I certainly liked how Harry in the movie doesn't blow his gasket at Hermione when he finds out what happened to his wand (though I question the need for wand to be broken in the movie). Then again movie!Harry is more courageous/sympathetic/competent than the jackass we got in the novel.

Part 1 however was certainly better than 2. It had more room to breathe and character moments for Harry and Hermione and even Ron. Part 2 felt like them going through the motions to get to the end. It doesn't have the heart and character that Part 1 did.

Having now seen DH Part 2 - about 24 hours ago - I can say that agree with basically everything you say. :-)

I hated how Harry tried to make Hermione feel guilty for saving his life breaking his wand in the book, so I applaud the film folk making the lad more loveable in their movieverse. Triple the applause for his trying to comfort her with THE DANCE rather than callously leave her to cry herself to sleep over Won Won's betrayal.

though I question the need for wand to be broken in the movie

YES! His broken wand didn't appear at all in Part 2, did it? He certainly didn't try to fix it at the end. Slack writing on their part, I agree.

Part 1 however was certainly better than 2. It had more room to breathe and character moments for Harry and Hermione and even Ron.That's an interesting way of looking at the first half of DH. I tend to concentrate on how boring and lifeless it was, given Rowling's writing, but you're right, the flip side is the greater 'room to breathe and character moments' in the movieverse. Neat. I'm just ( ... )
