Freud was primarily interested in the earliest stages of life because he thought the earlier something happened the more buried and thus more important it would be. Thus the greater focus on childhood while all of adulthood is broken up into much larger chunks. But, different psychologists since then have focused more on later life. Personally, I don't find the stages particularly helpful. In some ways we deal with the issues of each stage at all points in our lives.
