Wow.. MADDOX FIC?!

This was inspired by the latest Maddox and Sam thread. Because... I was actually rather shocked at how Mads was reacting. He's been surprising me lately.

Maddox wasn’t a brave person. He rarely rushed into fights and was often the first to back down from an argument. This was perhaps why quite a few people found him so easy to mock. Even Lucas, who he admittedly hated, didn’t mind Maddox at all. Maddox could tell him off and yet Lucas would just laugh and give him a hearty pat on the back.

There was one person, however, that Maddox was surprisingly protective over. She had a way of making him want to save her. Perhaps it was because they were both so easy going that they became friends in his first year. Whenever someone would call Maddox a mudblood and he would run off, she would find him. She was the first pureblood that he had ever liked and the first one to be nice to him. He would probably be grateful about that for the rest of his life. Perhaps that is why, whenever he saw her sitting in the common room with a book with that sad and serene look on her face, all he wanted to do was make her happy again. Any and all problems she had with her family made him feel helpless. No matter what he said or did, he couldn’t fix her problems. He watched as she tried to cope with it, dated boys that weren’t good for her and remained in denial. Maddox wished that he could be a different person, a more aggressive and strong person. Instead he was stuck being the listener, the distraction. He saw himself as useless and was never aware what just being there for her meant.

By the time they were in their seventh year, he had enough. Maddox knew that he wasn’t a fighter and he didn’t have any power. He was well aware that most people found him as intimidating as a pygmy puff. Yes, easy going Maddox Dixon was often looked over. This made it easier to help her anyways. He knew his strengths and he would use them to the best of his ability. After all, you didn’t hurt Samantha Jones. Too many people had caused her so much pain, and he was going to put a stop to that. He would keep her safe no matter what.

After all of this, he never questioned why he was so protective. The crush on her had been there for years, but he’d never acted on it. His friendship with her was much more important, and he had always known that. Maddox wasn’t one to have a hero complex, and was perfectly happy with living an average life. Yet every time Sam was in trouble, he was there, doing whatever he could to help her.

This was what he was pondering as he laid there, waiting for death. It almost seemed like a fitting way to die. At least he’d finally saved her life, he finally made a difference. This odd sense of satisfaction filled him as let himself fall into the darkness.
