There's a discussion going on over at kabale 's LJ on new anti-obscenity laws being proposed in the US and UK that are really damn scary (for example, equating S&M with bestiality). Go check it out.
I absolutely agree - the extreme physical focus of most obscenity laws leads to this very arbitrary standard: this body part but not that one, naked bodies are all right, but if they're writhing around, it's a higher rating, and so forth. And putting BDSM in the same category as beastiality shows either a very poor understanding of BDSM or the disturbing farmland routes of some of our legislators. :)
The problem, of course, is whether you can actually legislate the attitude of a piece without giving the censor vitually unlimited leeway.
