Thank you! I'm thinking of writing about my other literary crushes too, eventually.

I'm not a fan of Romola, but I think she perfectly captured Emma's character - lively, happy, confident, imposing, but also young and naive. JLM was utterly, utterly wonderful as Mr Knightley - if I could stand his faux-American accent, I would rent Eli Stone from LoveFilm, just to listen to his voice some more ;)

Which version of Emma, if any, do you prefer?

I enjoyed Clueless too, both on its own merits and for the Emma injokes (although some references didn't 'translate' to the modern day as well as others). Alicia Silverstone, though, is my Romola Garai - her cockeyed mouth had me transfixed, for all the wrong reasons! ;)

Hey hey! Long time, no LJ! How are you?

I'm ever grateful to the 2005 P+P for bringing the story to life for me, but you're right, it's not perfect. I actually enjoyed the Ciaran Hinds Persuasion - and, sorry to have to say, he was a more convincing Captain Wentworth than RPJ! I cannot bring myself to watch that adaptation - Sally Hawkins is unnecessarily unattractive as Anne, and what the hell was going on with the kiss at the end? He looked like he was about to attempt CPR on a gasping fish!

Have you seen the new film adaptation of Jane Eyre? I still can't stand the book, but I'm debating whether or not to see the film.

Great to hear from you again!

He had a look on his face like, "do we have to do this?"

Yes, exactly! lol :S

I haven't been posting much, just random book-themed gushing every now and again. Hope you're happy in your new job - ie, that you no longer work in the 1950s! - and good news on the novel! What's it about?

I did watch most of the Jane Eyre with Ciaran Hinds today, strangely enough. Very TV drama-esque - Samantha Morton as Jane (she was Harriet Smith in the Beckinsale Emma, but looked like she should have been playing Helen Burns with consumption), Abigail Cruttenden (Sharpe) as Blanche Ingram, and Elizabeth Garvie (1980s Lizzie Bennet) as StJohn's sister. RPJ was also in there, as StJohn, curiously enough! Wasn't all that bad, but I prefer less prim and pious heroines. (And what is the message Charlotte was trying to convey in blinding and scarring Rochester before he deserved Jane's love, I wonder?)
