Alright, so, my review of Tech's Jekyde goes as such: Praise Jesus, it was better than the first time I saw the show in Manchester.
Nothing against local theatre, I know that they do what they can because I myself have been involved with local theatre. However, I thought that the Lucy sounded like she'd been smoking since birth, and not in the way that makes the voice sultry and seductive and raspy. No, just raspy, and gross. The Jekyde was amazing, and the Emma could sing her arse off for a girl her age. But if I had to compare and pick a favorite between the two, it would definately be Tech's version. So, a huge thank you goes to my best friend Chaz for calling and telling me about it.
The day started out as such: I went to rehearsal from 10 to 12, stopped by my friend Matt's house to say hi to him before he headed out for Paris, and then I gased up and headed to Cookeville. I got there around 2, Chaz and I met up for sushi, and then I met some of his frat friends. All nice guys, those Sigma Chi's. We hung out in his dorm ( well, he napped, I sat on the computer ), and then we got ready for the show. Arrived thirty minutes before the curtain came up, snagged some really great seats and by this time I'm flipping out, wringing my program in my hands because I'm so excited.
The Overture and basically the entirety of the opening ( The Board of Governers/Yadda Yadda ) was great, albeit a bit boring. It seemed like it took a while for Jekyde to get into it, but by the time he hit "This Is The Moment", I was pretty much ready to play a Dangerous Game with him, if you catch my drift. Anyway. The Emma? Not as strong as the Lucy, who was a girl, according to Chaz, a year older than me. She messed up the choreography in "Bring On The Men", but she kept going. They gave her a whip, which was just FUNNY to watch, so she had something to cover it with. Her rendition of "Sympathy, Tenderness" almost made me cry. Almost. I was actually feeling more sparks between Jekyde/Lucy than with Jekyde/Emma, but I suppose that's how it goes sometimes, eh? Anyway, this guy's Hyde? I really was sort of scared. Really. I was torn between terror and lust, and if he can work that combination, more power to him. The Tech Chorus was basically put into costumes, given very simple choreography and told to sing "Facade" and "Murder, Murder", and it was obvious. BUT! They sounded brilliant. At one point, during "Facade", I had goose bumps. Actually, throughout the entire performance, I had goose bumps.
Anyway, onto my favorite number. Well, one of my two favorite numbers. "Dangerous Game". They cut out the sexual scene, which sort of disappointed me. In Manchester, they had one. It was basically foreplay with Tech's version. Lot'sa grinding and smoochies on the neck and all, which was just as equally smokin'. Uhm, let's see, I literally squeeled with excitement when Hyde hit the little "Loud and clear!" at the end. Wanted. To. Eat. Him. Up. "Confrontation" got a standing ovation from one side of the theatre. I think he was close to passing out, too. He looked it anyway.
Of the performers, I was most impressed with Jekyde, Lucy and Utterson. I was also really impressed by Lady Beaconsfield. Her death scene was hilarious, and I don't even know why. I think I annoyed Chaz with my endless recitation of the lines during that part.
" BAD NEWS FROM GOD, TEDDY. *Snickerfitgalore*"
" MADELYN, STFU. "
All in all, it was a very enjoyable experience.
I really miss PoTO RP.
