Wagashi

Wagashi, or Japanese confections, have been somewhat of an obsession for me as of late. My latest efforts were a revisiting of daifuku, rice flour dumplings filled with red bean paste.

The results would be a material example of the Japanese saying 'hana yori dango' (literally 'dumplings before flowers' that stresses the importance of practical concerns (in this case, taste) over aesthetics). )

That's a big daifuku! Mine were about the size of a wooden nickel. That's the nice thing about making your own, you can size them according to your hunger.

I often forget to check Just Hungry and actually hadn't seen Just Bento. That reminds me, I really should look around for a nice bento box.

Awesome! I really like daifuku--used to get 'em prepackaged at the JAS Mart at 110th & Broadway. Might try picking some up at the Asian market in Plainsboro next time I go. Thanks for the reminder of how good these are; I haven't had one in quite some time.
