That is so frickin' weird. I think you did the right thing, but yes, it is totally disconcerting. She didn't even know her due date? Oi vey. We had walkins A LOT in El Paso and they were always complicated and disorieting and not something I would ever do, especially in the middle of the night.
As far as I'm concerned, you're not required to be nice to anyone in the middle of the night who hasn't already paid for your valuable time. Regardless of whether or not it was a real call, you counseled her the way you thought was best.
you did the right thing. i would've done the same thing as you. that's just crazy. even the most screwy clients would know better than to consider that a prank, i hope? i mean, that's some serious shit. i think you should bring this and the other crazy calls you've received up at the next midwife meeting. see if anyone else is getting calls like this. i'm very quick to turn into Fox Moulder here, and be all X Files Midwife. i don't trust the "other side" and easily get caught up in fantasies about them un-doing lay midwifery by disturbing phone calls and labor traps.
