What error message does startx give before crashing? Usually it will be some problem with fonts or library dependencies.

Give the detailed log please. btb, run xf86config command to re-setup X. btb, Why redhat 8 still? I suggest remove the whole thing and install something new.

Fixed font has always been a problem with startx. This article talks about fixing such a problem. Hopefully, this should sort your problem out.

whatever is mentioned in the link is very relevant...
and i am doing the same thing, ie initially after booting the xfs status is dead, so i have to start it explicitly (which i never used to do before loading the device driver for internal modem)

well i think i have to customize the boot process..
was just wondering whether the problem is due to device driver r something else???

madam, why can't u write a simple shell script, and run both the commands in it.
finally to make it much simple give the name "startx" to it.
