Once more unto the Olympian breach

So tonight's the Olympics opening ceremonies. I don't know how many of y'all remember my Lori's Olympics Cheers 'n Jeers. Dunno if I'll be doing that this year. Honestly I don't know how much of it I'll be watching (it's all set to DVR). Of course I say that every year and then I end up glued to it like everybody else ( Read more... )

It's a frequent topic of conversation - see, for instance, the BBC article on the same. Sir Roger Bannister, who broke the four-minute mile, has apparently been very heavily backed in the past couple of days - could well be him. I'm working the night shift tonight and dearly looking forward to the whole shebang.

Boris Johnson is a figure of fun with some good lines, but he's really a nasty bastard. (To be fair, so was his principal opponent at the recent Mayoral election - it's just that his opponent was my sort of nasty bastard, many warts 'n' all.)

I doubt it's Sir Roger, on the grounds that, as a general rule, once one has carried the torch for a particular Olympic relay, one may not do it a second time for the same relay - one length per Olympics, and Sir Roger's had his already.

Did you know that Boris was born in the US? Me and the hubby are plotting a Boris for President campaign *LOL* Could you even imagine that!

Well, I feel better knowing that I wasn't the only one who just didn't see THAT coming!
Wasn't it great, the opening and closing ceremonies are my least favourite parts of any Olympics, but I did enjoy that a lot (despite getting up at 5.45am in order to watch it from the start)
As a by-the-by, it is quite possible for a torchbearer to do it twice, in Sydney 2000, the wonderful Cathy Freeman carried the torch a couple of days before the opening ceremony and then was the final torchbearer who lit the cauldron. (And then a week or so later brought her entire nation to tears when she won gold.) I suspect that one of the reasons she was in the relay early in the week was so that no-one would suspect-if she had NOT been a torchbearer, everyone would have known it would be her, because she is such a loved person here and such an obvious choice.

I've spent the past week re-reading Two Crows Joy, just wanted to read something comfortable, and I just wanted to let you know all over again how much I have enjoyed your BBM slash writing. Thank you.

I've been following the whole phenomenon, and I keep laughing whenever I come across another news story about another fan fiction writer who signed a publishing deal. There was another one today: http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/70782798.html

Hey, maybe there's a chance you can "file the serial numbers" off another one of your fanfics and get it published, who knows?

Oh yeah, I watched the Olympics opening ceremonies and I thought they tried way too hard to throw everything possibly British into it.
