Ah, you broke my heart into tiny little pieces and then put it back together again. This was entirely worth the wait.
This line: They stood in the kitchen, hugging each other tight, for a long time. The toast popped up, unnoticed, and grew cold. strikes me as one of those rare, perfect lines.
This glorious chapter was well worth the wait. The things it did to my poor heart, oh! I adored absolutely everything from the Sydney and Watson family drama to the nominations and gifts. Just so many overwhelming FEELINGS! <3
Absolutely amazing, all of it - and worthwhile to remember that Sydney may be the San Francisco of the south but it's also the home of Alan Jones and Kyle Sandilands (hawk spit).
John's elder brother welcoming Sherlock into the family and the confrontation with John's father was family dynamics at their best. And Sherlock and John at (now their) Sussex house was pure delight.
Oh, thank you. I know that, as the beta, I am very protective of the story, but I saw someone on tumblr post that Sydney is a really odd city for Lori to have chosen as the site of homophobic vandalism because it's got a large queer population and is very queer-friendly. All I could think was--that doesn't make it exempt. EVERY big city, no matter how queer-friendly, has its share of homophobic violence. Hate crimes are everywhere. Being a queer-friendly city doesn't mean that *nobody* who lives there is homophobic.
Sorry but as a bi Sydneysider that really threw me out of the story, I don't think either of you quite get how out of character for Sydney something like that would be, beyond the point of it being an enormously GLBT friendly city, it is also very much a, oh, you're a celebrity just look how many fucks we do not give kind of city too. We're talking about a place where Tom Cruise used to slip off to the pub to play pool while Nicole was visiting family and Orlando Bloom walks his dog down to get a coffee at the local cafe. Mostly we just don't care that much
( ... )
I am sorry it threw you out of the story. I certainly can relate to that; I've had that experience a number of times all through my life in fandom. I can only say that people who want to "make a statement" when it comes to their beliefs are everywhere--even in places we think would be entirely free of this attitude or action. If it might mitigate your response, it's entirely possible that the people who committed the crime weren't from Sydney, but came to Sydney to do it, just as the Phelps clan here in America travels from state to state to mount protests against gays, even cities such as New York and San Francisco.

And I squeed at the Python ref.
(See? Even Moriarty is shocked and awed!)
