Hearts and Bones

The world is filled with too many sad stories. Somtimes I think I can't bear it anymore.....
On a completely unrelated note:

Does anyone else hate the end of the semester, or is it just me? It's too chaotic and some of my friends are leaving to go do research many, many miles away. :( I'm know I'm supposed to be excited that the summer is ( Read more... )

i highly recommend Jas. Mathus and His Knockdown Society Play Songs for Rosetta.
James Mathus (formerly/currently of the Squirrel Nut Zippers and a really nice guy) went back down to his hometown of Clarksdale, Miss. and got together with some of the local blues greats there and recorded an old fashioned down in the delta blues (not like Blueshammer ;) ) as a tribute to his nanny Rosetta Patton, daughter of Charlie Patton (who inspired people like leadbelly and howlin' wolf)
anyway, great cd of songs mostly predating 1920.

the second album is a CCR style 60's rock cd, which i would not recommend as much, unless you like '60 style CCR music.

wow, I did not realize James Mathus was from Clarksdale. It is real hothouse for blues history.
And I love Charley Patton! I have an old tape of him, stuff like "Revenue Man Blues."
I should check out your reference.
I have always considered Dallas (okay, a bias there, but there is a lot to be found, and I even wrote a research paper on it, once), Memphis, Kansas City, Chicago, and (of course!) varous Mississippi sites to be the locus points for blues. I guess everyone does, really. Even Britain has become that. I have to thank Mr. Eric Clapton for my introduction to many old american blues great.
I am glad there are other blues enthusiasts out there. I love it, it reaches inside me in a way I cannot articulate. But then I am ruled by emotion rather than intellect. Though, really, blues has intellect too....
Do you know Bukka White, Mississippi John Hurt, or

or (I cut off too early) Memphis Minnie? she blows me away. As does Big Mamma Thornton. You're right, she put Elvis in his place. Ma Rainey too, she kicks ass.

Well, even though they might fall under the Texas blues category, Leadbelly and Gatemouth Brown are Louisiana boys...but who's keeping track? ;)

I also like Mance Lipscomb, who is like Texas' answer to Mississippi John Hurt.

yeah, I know my "texas blues" category is kinda sloppy, I'm stealing basically from other states. I guess I was referring to the "texas sound" (whatever that is) and included guys who had travelled through there and made part of their careers there. Plus, I am very fond of Louisiana. :)
I feel horrible I left out Mance Lipscomb! Even though he does call himself a "songster." I even used some interviews with him as documents for that paper I wrote. He's lovely. I love "Trouble in Mind" "Ella Speed" "Momma Don't Allow" "Motherless Children" and "Goin Down Slow."
I should add him now!

Oh, wow. I'm like an ephebic lost little child who has wondered through life with no direction, and only a rudimentary collection of blues rekkkids. Much for me to hear. Oh yes.

I need to go to Texas.

What a mischievous grin Bill has in that picture! ;) and if I could see his eyes more clearly, I'm certain I'd see a galaxy of twinkles too!
