Y'know, I think I read somewhere that Cash hates this picture. It was taken during his dark, drug-consumed days, probably around the time he got banned for life from the Grand Ole Opry for beating up some footlights, and he doesn't like the side of himself that it shows. I think he sued to stop somebody from selling T-shirts with the picture on it.

heyyyyyyy! cool! the picture was from him performing at San Quentin prison in 1970. I figured one of them owned it. Since the ad was issued by Johnny's record company, American Recordings, he fully authorized the release. Anyway, yeah it's a moment that captures rage but it's amazing for that. And the fuck off to Nashville is fantastic. It's funny, poking fun at himself and at the industry and making a statement at the same time.
And man oh man do I hate this pop country crap they release now. I'll take Johnny, Willie, Merle, Waylon, Hank, George Jones, and Lefty Frizell (and many, many others like them) any day.

Hmm.. I didn't know that! I guess I read something that was less than accurate. I do know he sued somebody making unauthorized t-shirts of that picture.
Unchained is one hell of an album. Just like everything else in the American series! I think my favorite American album is probably 3, actually. The first Cash album I ever bought. I get chills every time I hear The Mercy Seat.
