I like is episode too. I kinda wish they'd bring back Missouri. The boys could use a friendly face. I often wonder what would have happened to the John character is Jeffrey Dean Morgan hadn't gone to do Watchmen. Would they have kept him and made him more of a real father figure?

I also wonder just how much of the Sam/Mom/Yellow Eyes story they had flushed out back then. Was that 'sorry' for the deal or just a general sorry for not being there for her boy?

I'll shut up now.

You know, it's so strange to say it, but I hate John Winchester and yet, I love him. And JDM could read me the phone book and I'd be a happy camper. What intrigues--and in a way also moves me--is that we've learned so much about him as the show has progressed. We've gotten pretty solid confirmation he could be physically abusive *tear for the boys there, big one*, he was an alcoholic and all around deadbeat dad, tbh. Even still, I do genuinely believe he loved his boys, too, but he didn't know how to be a father and he was bitter-angry and so very alone--and he took that out on them. It's classic Shitty Parent 101 and you can see the effects that had on Sam and Dean both in totally different ways. God, I could meta this to death, but I shan't lest anyone defriend me over it (today it was werewolves that got me ditched *insert eye roll here*) Actually, tbh, I won't ever do meta on it because it would be long and psychoanalytical, not because I am afraid of being defriended (or is unfriended? gah, made up words and their different forms ( ... )

John was an abusive father which is one of the reasons I'd would have liked to see what they would have done with his character if he had stayed. Would there have been an eventual showdown between John and Dean/Sam because of his treatment of the other brother. I can see the one thing Dean would snap at his father for is being a dick to Sam.
If John had stayed and it got to the psychic story line would he have tried to kill Sam himself (again putting Dean in the choose sides position).
On that note. When John told Dean he'd have to kill Sam if he couldn't save him. How much did he know? How much had the writers figured out at that point. Did they just mean the psychic powers or where they talking about releasing Lucifer?
