One of the things I love most about Lane as a character is his strange blend of optimism and melancholy. He has big dreams and is a romantic at heart (as seen in his interactions with Rebecca, Toni, and Joan) but he doesn't have the self-assurance or the glib demeanor which could get him over that next obstacle to better mobility/success. And the fact that his arc ended in suicide is just the worst. I'm still depressed about it, which is probably why I spend so much time writing AUs to counteract that storyline. :P
You make good points about Rebecca, too. I've never hated her, which is probably a testament to Embeth Davidtz more than anything else. My personal headcanon is that they got married out of necessity rather than love. He needed a foot in the door of upper middle class society, she needed to be married, etc.

I've been having a good conversation with an LJ-er on Mad Men there in the comments if you're interested in it.
I'm also still depressed about Lane's suicide! I had no idea that Jared is going to direct one of the 7B episodes- I hope that also means flashback or Lane having a big role in a dream sequence. I think your point about Rebecca sounds right. It seems like a marriage of convenience.
