Unpleasant things of late

Oh, Jeju wind!  It's beautiful to see the trees in wild motion and hear that dramatic moaning, but it is quite another thing to have a steady hooting noise haunt you through the night.  Some nights it's hard to sleep for the sound of beating wind.

This post reminds me of Japan, where I had spent one year teaching English not so long ago. The Japanese seem to have a similar superiority complex in regard to both the Koreans and Chinese (I'm generalizing here of course). They don't voice their prejudices as often or as loudly as the Koreans perhaps, but they do have them in spades. They seem to like Taiwan though (where I grew up) for some reason. I think the Koreans have a similar attitude (judging from a few Korean people I talked to) in regard to Taiwan and China.

By the way, I'm not a stalker. I just friended you because I like reading journals of expats/travelers since I miss traveling so much. I don't you don't mind my living vicariously through you. :)

there's a great line in Salman Rushdie's Fury, wherein a black journalist goes abroad to explore inter-racial political conflicts and comes back absolutely crushed by the much bigger amount of intra-racial political conflict he's seen ( ... )
