May 17, 2011 11:12

Hey everyone; I just found this community while looking for some advice, and I hope it's ok to ask for salon recommendations (or even stylist recommendations, if you have one for me!). I didn't see anything in the rules against it, so here goes ( Read more... )

I used to work at a salon that isn't too far from Newark that could do it for you. It is called Salon Bangles in Springfield, NJ and you should ask for Nicki or Maria.

Get highlights as light as possible. Then, you can do the purple at home (you can definitely get purple in a regular drugstore!). What you will REALLY want is a purple STAIN to put in your conditioner for when you shower. I did black hair with purple highlights through it, then put a bottle of stain in my conditioner, which, while my hairdresser dye job faded out, turned my whole head purple and kept it that way for a solid month, until I dyed my hair brown (not by choice...and the brown had a DEFINITE purple sheen to it...let me get you some pics).

Gah, internet glitch. Yay slow internet connection...

Thank you for the detailed suggestions. What color is your hair naturally? The pictures look great and are very helpful. :)

I didn't even know that purple stain for conditioner existed. I'm going to be working at a summer camp all summer; do you think the stain might stain the showers? They're the cheap stalls you can get at Home Depot - I wouldn't want to "damage" camp property, especially in such a way that it will be so identifiably me, lol.

Also, I really want long-lasting dye, and drugstore stuff has never lasted long for me. I've heard Pravana is good, but you have to have a cosmetic licence to get it.

Well, it was a purple stain, the hairdresser actually recommended that I put it in my conditioner. I got it at...BSO. For the dye itself, try Sally's or any other beauty outlet. I mean, it's not a big deal if you're willing to shell out at the hairdresser for the initial dye :)
The stain never stained my OWN shower, but my hands were purple the whole time, including my nails.

My hair is uh...well, I'm growing it out to find the natural colour, but it looks to be dark ash blonde (I usually dye it black, red, or purple).

my suggestion is to go to a salon, get your hair bleached, then go home and do the purple yourself. Get special effects because its the best 'temp' dye there is. I get it on ebay or from brokencherry.com

or at least buy it and bring it to the salon with you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm actually looking for the best permanent dye, as I'd like this to at least last the summer, and longer if I can get it to. I've heard that Pravana is good for this, so I think I'm going to order it and bring it with me to the salon I go to.

My concern with bleaching was that I read somewhere that bleached hair doesn't hold onto unnatural colors that well, and again, I want this to be as permanent as possible. I'm thinking of perhaps lightening my hair before I go to NY, letting that settle in, and then dying purple...but I guess I have some research to do to figure out what will last longest.

..if I didnt bleach my hair the pink would never stay. I put the same pink on my friends slightly lightened hair and it stays for like a week before fading completely. My pink never goes away. I redye every 2 months when I do my roots.
