This afternoon it was warm and sunny, for a change. The clouds were piled up out to sea, so huge and solid you could almost feel their weight. It was a good afternoon for gardening. At this time of year there are a number of tasks which need doing.
Today I had the enviable task of holding emptied coal sacks so that Peter could turn out the compost heap and store it for next year. It makes a hugs difference to our soil which is light, sandy and well drained. It adds moisture retention, certainly makes for good potato growing ground.
So having done half the heap (and its quite a heap) we decided that we could finish tomorrow and retired indoors for food. And what food. A simple omelette (can't take any credit for that) but accompanied by a load of freshly dug new potatoes (Charlotte of course) and freshly picked broad beans. Anything that is more than an hour out of the garden aint fresh in this house. They tasted fantastic. There is nothing like real fresh food, and makes all the compost shovelling worthwhile.
I love the flowers of the spring, and the new leaves on the trees and the scented early summer, but soon we will have my favourite time of year in the garden, the harvest. The beans first, then soon the redcurrants. Then everything else, sometimes too much to deal with in one go. But its good, and productive and so satisfying.
