We’re on the train from Firenze to Roma, travelling through the Tuscan countryside. I’ve been taking photos through the window of the train, but they only show the facts: the geographiccal arrangement of trees and houses and fields, which is deeply unsatisfying. The important thing about Toscano was expressed to me by my then host Signor Avvocato d' XXXXX as follows:

Men who live on plains get Big Ideas.
Men who live on mountains see everybody else as tiny and insignificant.
But in Toscano, we have many small hills so we cannot see very far. And thus, we learned civilization.

The fireflies should be well and truly out by now. It is a splendid thing indeed.
