Baby stuff

Dec 29, 2009 20:37

An email went around one of the worklists on Christmas Eve, saying someone was preparing to sell her house and wanted to get rid of her baby stuff for a nominal price. So I rang her up yesterday and arranged to come over today to look at things and take them away if we liked them. So we now have a Bertini pram with a bassinette and a stroller seat ( Read more... )

I'm glad we're not the only ones: we have similar boxes from moving here 5 years ago - I'm certain we don't need the stuff in them but they have to be gone through before I can toss them. I think some of it's my childhood stuff, and some teaching resources - I'll have to decide what is actually likely to be useful...

From what I've seen of proper co-sleeper cots, the My Little Bed looks like it would be easier to deal with. Our solution to not changing our sheets as well as bubs was to have a towel across the bed at approx boob level and that caught milk dribbles, the occasional nappy wee leak and the couple of times A got gastro and hurled all over the place. Having a bit of separation is also useful so you don't get whacked in the face by a flailing arm in the middle of the night :-)

Something I found invaluable in the pram (on the rare occasion I used it in the first few months) was a reversible handle. Bubs don't like mummy being out of view when tiny but later Must. See. What. is. Happening! Have you thought about getting some kind of carrier? They're much easier to get around with than a pram and bub is usually heaps happier too.

The handle isn't reversible, unfortunately (the only one I've seen with a switchable handle is the Bugaboo, which is ridiculously expensive), but the hood on the bassinette, the bassinette itself and the stroller attachment are reversible - not quite as easy as flicking the handle over, but hopefully workable. And yes, we're definitely planning to get a sling/carrier of some description.

I'm not sure if it's still around or would suit your needs, but the Childcare Discovery is what we've got and has reversible handles. It's a four-wheeler though which can be a downside for some :-) I got it from Target I think. I tried a Bugaboo and hated the way it handled, between that, the price and the choice recommendations it was an easy one to stay away from!

You may already have contacts for this but if you need, I can get you info of someone who would have a range of different carriers that you could try before deciding what to get :-)

Oh, I second the comments about a bedrail, even if you don't use it early on, it's always useful for when Robin is in their own bed in years to come.

I got a Choice online subscription for looking up nursery furniture etc which has been quite useful. Their tests actually found that the supposedly top-of-the-line Bugaboo is less safe than some cheaper models of stroller!
The My Little Bed looks much like the solution we came to with the carry-cot, but better as it has those extra pillows for keeping baby on back and away from the sides (I did worry sometimes when B would roll towards me and into the sides of the carrycot; fortunately it was washable, because she spewed on it a number of times!) Are you planning to put Robin on your side or the middle? D couldn't handle having her in the middle, he likes his space :) If you put baby on the side, you might want to get a bed rail as well just in case.
WRT cot mattresses: a lot of the SIDS info I've seen suggests getting a new mattress for each baby; some researcher has a theory that gases from bacteria which live in the mattress and feed off baby spew and sweat etc can cause SIDS, which may be why the rate is higher in later-born
