um, aside from *maybe* the merlin, who is Ancient Mai secondary to?

Yeah, Ancient Mai. But just about every other woman in the books. Maybe Butcher got better. I read Storm Front, the second or third, and gave up.

I confess that I've skimmed through the books (reading a page or three here and there, then skipping ahead) more than a dozen times...so Mai and the Oracle (yes, she has a driver and bodyguard - does that count?) are the only ones I can think of.

It's funny, because Butcher wrote a Spider-man tie-in novel that I loved...and had several great scenes with Mary Jane and the Black Cat. So he actually can write strong female characters. One of the comments on that review suggested it was a trope of the flim noir detective story (which came out of the 20s and 30s) that he was merging with urban fantasy.

I don't know. I just know the books annoyed me, but the tv series was much better.
