Monday I started a new job, as Project Manager at the American Bookbinders Museum. In downtown SF!  (After the commute to Palo Alto, having a 15 minute jaunt on BART is a very pleasant thing.) Today the sun is shining and the sky is a clear. I showered the smoked pork shoulder smell out of my hair. I might even take a walk along the riverside, if schedule permits. But everyone in my house still has a residual cough.

Apparently the deal in eastern Washington is: when it gets cooler, the wind picks up. Today there was lots of wind, bringing with it the acrid, dusty smell of fire. There was so much particulate matter in the air that the sun was orange-pink all day, and the green traffic lights were a clear, bright sapphire.  I like Spokane just fine, and Worldcon ( Read more... )

I am putting together my cake making on the road kit (it appears that the cottage we're staying in doesn't have a mixing bowl. This must be remedied) and starting to pack. I have a 7am flight tomorrow, heading Spokane-ward, arriving (Gods willing) at 10:30 for a 1pm Book View Cafe kaffee klatsch. And then the real madness starts ( Read more... )

Which is to say, Becca got to Sarasota after a lovely trip. She met the Pie Lady of Pie Town, NM; she saw the Grand Canyon, and ate beignets at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. She is happy to be back at school. I'm very proud of her.

So as Becca wends her way across Texas toward New Orleans (tonight's goal) I am 1) wrestling with two non-compliant novels and one non-compliant short story, 2) plotting what I need to take to Sasquan for cake baking for the Friday night BVC party, and what I will need to buy on the spot, 3) thinking about how much clothing I can pack in and around ( Read more... )

The kid took off at O-God-Thirty this morning. She and her buddy stopped at the Cesar Chavez National Monument, and arrived in Barstow (their first stop). I supplied chocolate chip cookies, she has water and popcorn and Monster Trail Mix, and has promised  updates. I'm sure she'll have a brilliant time--she's just the kind of kid who would.

So on Wednesday morning, waaaaay early, Becca gets in her car (her car! which she --mostly-- bought, with her own money!) for the drive back to Sarasota and college. Danny has been dealing with his anxiety about the trip by teaching her about cars--an extremely useful coping mechanism, if you ask me. We have been making lists, she has places to ( Read more... )
