Chapter Six

Don and Danny met Mrs. Flack outside the Dim Sum place. She smiled, saying, "So this is Danny. Don, you never mentioned he was so cute."

"Hello, Mrs. Flack."

"Oh, call me Ma, if you like. Now, tell me about yourself. I doubt my husband's image of you is correct."

"It’s probably right to a certain degree, I mean age, family, etc. My reasoning behind asking for a way out is not part of the report he saw. He thinks I did it to save my skin, and I guess it was, but...Dad's not exactly a law-abiding citizen, and he's a mean bas- My mom and I…he smacked us around a bit, telling us we’re trash. No one believes me, as we’ve never been sent to the hospital with suspicious injuries. He's not a screamer, so the neighbors don't know. Louis is in a bad place, and he can't get out, he's been Sonny's friend since the cradle, pardon the metaphor, but Riff and Tony from West Side Story, but before Tony grew a spine. Mom doesn't like his activities, but she can't do much, she basically doesn't exist in the records since my birth. I knew what was going on with Sonny, as I'm good at eavesdropping, and I took my tape recorder with me, to see if I could get evidence that would put Sonny away for a long time, give Louis a chance to get away from that life. It didn't quite work, as Louis didn't lose his loyalty to Sonny, but I needed out, and this got me there after my wrist was busted. My initial plan was to play college baseball, get a scholarship that way, but I shattered my wrist the beginning of the season last year. I've always been good at science and puzzling things out, so the possibility to be a CSI is great."

"So that went really well. Do you have to work today, or do you want to go somewhere?"

"Don, you know I work Thursday through Sunday. Though I'm on the after-theater shift tonight, not a double like the last couple weeks, so I have until 6:30. It’s kinda cold out, so can we go inland a bit or inside?"

"How about taking the subway up to Strawberry Fields, then a walk and coffee?"

"Nice. Warm train, trees to break the wind, then coffee. First, I'm going across the street to buy a watch-cap so my ears don't fall off."

The train was kind of crowded, as it was just after eleven on a Saturday, but they weren't going to complain about having to stand close to one another. There were lots of little kids around, so they just held hands, hidden by the folds of their coats. Danny kept up a constant commentary on people-watching, Don was just trying not to laugh too loudly or kiss Danny for being so cute.

When they arrived at the Fields, Danny was warmed up again, and pulled Don off the platform toward the exit.

“Come on, we can get cocoa to drink as we walk.”

Don laughed a bit in surprise, he didn’t expect his much smaller love to be able to drag him around like that.

“Danny, we have 4 hours until you need to head to work. You can slow down a bit.”

Danny turned, seeing Don’s smile, and stopped for a few seconds, then dragged him to the coffee stand just outside the station. They bought their drinks, then set off, other arms wrapped around each other. They walked for a little while, then sat at the base of a tree, Danny sitting between Don’s legs. They were talking about plans for Halloween, as Don had been invited with a plus one, to a Police and Fire banquet, like last year. Danny was going to help with a community center party to stand in for trick-or-treating.

“I don’t want you to ruin your career, Don. Not over me. And your dad’ll make a big fuss if I show up with you.”

“Well I’m definitely not taking one of my sisters’ friends, or Lita, Derek’s little sister. She doesn’t need the encouragement. Why don’t I beg off the banquet and help with the party?”

“You would? Remember, you do have to keep your hands off me for the duration of the party, there’ll be kids there.”

Jokingly, Don said, “Well maybe I should change my mind…Seriously, that’s probably a good thing, I can’t be all over you in public, I need to learn. But starting tomorrow, this is too nice,” wrapping his arms tightly around Danny’s waist.
