Hmmm. Assuming people would go along with it and act like nothing was different, I might pick Willow. It's a lovely name, and my favorite tree as a child was a weeping willow. I had a swing on it, and often I'd climb up into its branches and just sit up there. It was my friend, as corny as that sounds. Willow trees are by far one of my favorites.
I've thought about it from time to time. I think I'd like to have a more androgynous name - both of mine are ridiculously girly to the extent that I've never used one (and only learnt how to spell it when I discovered my love for history) and only use three letters of the other. Thanks a lot for giving me rubbish names, parents. Not sure what exactly I'd pick though.
I know what you mean by the androgynous aspect. I think I would go with Darby. Though it's supposed to be a girl's name, it's used by both genders. It is also has the extra appeal of being associated with Darby Crash of the Germs.
i can and have. there were a couple reasons at the time (or more precisely one reason to do it, and another to do it at that time).
names are powerful. the act of naming something is an act of ownership. in my own philosophy responsibility is one of the most important values, which is impossible without owning every action you make. to do that you have to decide for yourself who you are, the act of naming oneself comes as a side effect of that. people misunderstand when i say that though; i dont think my parents were conciously out to own me, and i respect their right to call me by whatever they please. it was simply an important decision for me, and my name reflects that. just for entertainment i made it numerogically correct while i was at it.
as for the time... i was being looked for by people i didnt want to find me. seemed a simple enough answer.
